Description

The Pediatric Nurse specializing in Intellectual Disability (ID) provides compassionate, holistic care to infants, children, and adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This role emphasizes supporting children’s health, growth, and well-being while addressing their unique physical, emotional, and developmental needs. The nurse works closely with pediatricians, therapists, educators, and families to create individualized care plans that promote independence, dignity, and quality of life.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Assess, plan, and provide nursing care to children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Administer medications, treatments, and vaccinations safely while adapting approaches to meet each child’s needs.
Monitor and document growth, developmental milestones, behavioral changes, and overall health status.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (pediatricians, therapists, psychologists, educators, and social workers) to develop and implement individualized care plans.
Support families by providing education on care techniques, behavioral strategies, nutrition, medication management, and health promotion.
Create a safe, supportive, and child-friendly environment that fosters trust and reduces anxiety for children with special needs.
Advocate for the rights, inclusion, and well-being of children with intellectual disabilities within healthcare and community settings.
Assist children and families in navigating healthcare systems, support services, and community resources.
Provide emotional support and guidance to families coping with challenges related to intellectual disability.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation in compliance with healthcare standards and legal requirements.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent; Pediatric Nursing specialization preferred.
License/Certification: Current Registered Nurse (RN) license; Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred. Training or certification in intellectual/developmental disability nursing is an advantage.
Experience: Minimum 2 years of pediatric nursing experience; prior experience with children with intellectual or developmental disabilities is highly desirable.
