Position title: Inclusive Education Consultant
Reports to: Executive Director of Advocacy and Family Initiatives
Hours: Position 40 hours per week
Location: Provincial Role located in Edmonton
Inclusion Alberta, as a family advocacy organization, is committed to providing individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families with personalized advocacy that contributes to a meaningful and inclusive life.
Similarly, families and individuals with intellectual disabilities, including those with complex needs, require assistance in planning and securing an inclusive life. Some of the means to an inclusive life include maximizing benefits from individualized funding and other supports as needed to engage as a participatory and valued community member.
Schools are crucial in shaping the culture and values of inclusive communities. Inclusion Alberta is dedicated to enhancing the ability of schools, districts, and families to implement effective inclusive practices that can better meet the needs of students with intellectual disabilities.
The Inclusive Education Consultant in the Provincial role is passionate about supporting inclusive education. They will work with families, schools, and school divisions to enhance the inclusion of children with intellectual disabilities in regular education classrooms. The consultant will collaborate with advocates, other consultants, families, children with intellectual disabilities, and schools and districts to ensure quality, inclusive education.
We are currently seeking an Inclusive Education Consultant to work with children and adults with intellectual disabilities to have access to a good, inclusive life in the community.
Duties and responsibilities: This list is not conclusive; it is intended to summarize the primary duties and responsibilities. Staff may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.
- Work directly with families, schools, and school divisions to advance the inclusion of children with intellectual disabilities in the general education classrooms.
- Work directly with families and their children with intellectual disabilities and with schools to address issues of access and quality in inclusive education
- Assist teachers in modifying and adapting their lesson plans and instructions, from kindergarten to grade 12, to provide high-quality inclusive education for students with intellectual disabilities. Help them facilitate the continued inclusion of students with intellectual disabilities as they transition from grade to grade and school to school.
- Assist individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families understand the importance of high school planning and preparation to create opportunities for a meaningful life.
- Assist school teams in facilitating peer relationships, utilizing natural supports for students with intellectual disabilities to engage in curriculum and school-related activities in the hope of forming friendships.
- Assist in co-teaching and modelling high-quality inclusive education practices to teachers and school teams.
- Enhance the skills of resource teachers and or key stakeholders to better assist with adaptations and facilitate peer support among teachers.
- Resource development for school teams and families on quality inclusive education practices.
- Assist teachers in developing individual program plans that revolve around inclusive practices.
- Assist teachers and administration in meaningful assessment and reporting for students with intellectual disabilities.
- Provide professional development opportunities to families and school and district teams on high quality inclusive education.
- Support the professional growth and development of Inclusion Alberta initiatives as required, including providing professional development to advocates, the inclusive post-secondary team, and other initiatives centered on high-quality inclusive education practices
- Work with families to refine their vision for their child(ren)’s inclusive education.
- Act as a bridge between family visions for inclusive education and how to put them into practice in school systems
- Stay current on inclusive education research and trends.
- Build positive and collaborative relationships with schools, school districts and families.
- Work in partnership with Inclusion Alberta advocates to support families, schools and students with intellectual disabilities effectively with inclusive education.
- Work with colleagues and leadership to develop and implement effective consultation strategies for families and schools.
- Prepare updates on the work being done with families and schools
- Monitor the Inclusive Education waitlist and coordinate with advocates and the Advocacy and Families Initiatives team on which files to open and when.
- Monthly report writing of consultative work and inclusive education trends to the executive team.
- As part of the Federal Government Community Inclusion Initiatives grant, Inclusive Education Consultants are required to write monthly, biannual and annual reports on consultative work and trends in inclusive education.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor of Education degree and a teaching certificate that qualifies to teach in Alberta.
- A deep and abiding commitment to inclusive education in the K-12 system and the inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in all aspects of community and home life.
- Demonstrated ability to develop positive and collaborative relationships with families and the systems with which they interact.
- Strong problem-solving and listening skills.
- Direct experience in the education system as a teacher is an asset.
- Strong research skills to stay current on research supporting inclusive education
- Skilled in building partnerships, effectively managing priorities, continuously learning and improving, readily receiving feedback, establishing strong rapport, practicing generative listening, and effectively seeing the big picture.
