Description

Background UNDP activities are based on the premise of embracing diversity, equity and inclusion. This premise is fundamental for the professional enrichment of young people in general, as well as for the UNDP work environment itself. In line with the Agenda 2030 and its pledge of “leaving no one behind”, this internship position aims to provide training and an immersive professional experience for marginalized groups of people in the United Nations system, such as young women, people with disabilities, people from underprivileged backgrounds, such as low-income families, LGBTI people, people living with HIV, among other groups. UNDP’s Country Programme Document in Angola support Government’s decentralization agenda to a more decentralized inclusive system anchored on a participatory local governance model, laws and regulations enabling for effective participation of citizens. UNDP is well positioned to facilitate the inclusion of vulnerable and marginalised populations in the mainstream social and governance structures, leveraging UNDP’s role as a convener, integrator and connector. The UNDP’s #WeBelongAfrica Programme in Angola integrates two projects, namely the “Inclusive Governance Initiative” (IGI) and the “Southern Africa Young Key Population Initiative” (YKP). The programme is designed to support state entities in sub-Saharan Africa to become increasingly accountable and responsive to, and inclusive of, LGBTI people and young key populations, which in turn will contribute to better laws, more responsive public sector services, and social norms that affirm these populations’ perspectives, needs and rights. UNDP internship programme offers graduate and undergraduate-level students the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to UNDP's work with the objective of deepening their knowledge and understanding of UNDP’s goals, principles, and activities. It is designed to complement a variety of studies with practical professional experience in various areas. The purpose of this internship is to provide the selected intern with structured learning and practical exposure to development issues, particularly related to marginalized people, LGBTI people, HIV-related key populations and gender equality, while gaining first hand experience of the day to day working environment of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The internship is designed as a learning opportunity to complement the intern’s academic or early professional training through supervised, hands-on involvement in UNDP’s program or operational work. The internship is not intended to replace staff functions, nor does it constitute an employment relationship or imply any expectation of future employment with UNDP. Internally at UNDP, this position will also assist in promoting a more gender-inclusive workplace and in projects and programs in the Country Office. Under the overall guidance of the Head of the SDIC Unit, and with support of the Programme Analyst LGBTI Inclusion Angola and Gender Equality Analyst, the Inclusive Governance intern will learn about the provision of programme and policy support ensuring high quality, accuracy and consistency of work. The Inclusive Governance intern will be coached to promote a client-oriented approach consistent with the Agenda 2030, Agenda 2063, and UNDP’s principles, rules, and regulations. The intern will work in close collaboration with the programme and policy staff in the country office and with wider UNDP staff to learn how to provide consistent programme and policy support and service delivery. The Head of the Sustainable Development and Inclusive Growth Unit will lead, coordinate and supervise the intern’s activities, supported by the Programme Analyst and Gender Analyst. Duties and Responsibilities Provides programme and policy support, focusing on the achievement of the following results: • Learn how UNDP Angola structures its projects and policies, while assisting with routine tasks. • Gain exposure to methodologies for data collection, analysis, and reporting in a development context of LGBTI inclusion and right issues. • Participate in the mapping process of key stakeholders for potential engagement with the #WeBelongAfrica programme and other governance-related initiatives. • Learn how to contribute to strategy development and implementation of #WeBelongAfrica workplan in the country, targeting and facilitating interactions with relevant stakeholders, under supervision. • Support desk research and background analysis on governance-related themes, particularly on inclusion. • Learn how the implementation, monitoring, and reporting of the Country Office Gender Strategy works, and other gender mainstreaming initiatives in the Country Office. • Provide logistical and coordination support for meetings, workshops, consultations, and events organized by the programme, including preparation of agendas, participant lists, and meeting materials. • Learn the basics of financial and operational compliance in project execution. • Support the drafting and editing of internal documents such as concept notes, briefs, presentations, meeting summaries, and progress notes related to governance programs. • Participate in the training for the operations/projects staff on LGBTI and KP inclusion, women’s rights, and feminist approaches to development issues. • Provide support to the implementation of ongoing SDIC Unit projects and initiatives, including preparation of workplans, activity tracking, and documentation of results. • Carry out assigned tasks in a professional manner, respecting UNDP rules, ethical standards, and confidentiality requirements. • Perform other duties related to the work of the SDIC, as required and appropriate to the learning nature of the internship. Required Skills and Experience Education: • Enrolled student of a degree programme or completed 4 years of full-time studies at a university in the field of Social Sciences with priority for Social Sciences, International Relations, Development Studies, Law, and other related disciplines Experience: • No professional experience required. • Previous exposure or engagement with LGBTI people, SOGIESC themes, gender equality, women’s rights, and sensitivity to working with front-line activists is desirable. Language: • Fluency in Portuguese and working knowledge of English is required. • The intern will be motivated to improve English language skills during the internship programme. Eligibility for internships in UNDP • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation. • Only nationals will be considered for this internship program • Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. • Interns receive a monthly stipend paid in local currency.
