JOB DESCRIPTION

Are you looking for a new direction with your career?
Are you a people person, with a clinical or therapeutic background in supporting people with disabilities and who shares our core values of empowerment, inclusivity and kindness?
Do you have experience or training in nursing, therapeutic delivery (SLT/OT/Physio) or enablement or working as an Allied Health/Social Care Professional. Are you looking to use your skills to enhance the quality of lives of adults with a brain injury / stroke?
This is a home-based role with daily travel throughout Hunts (and Peterborough - optional). Ideally you will be living within easy access of the North and West of the County. As this is a new post there will be an element of you developing working / referrer relationships with professionals in the Third Sector, Community / Primary Health and Social Care settings, attending networking events, speaking to GPs and social prescribers and raising awareness of your role and the support you can offer people living with a brain injury / stroke in their community. Knowledge of these sectors would be preferred.
At the end of the two years (or earlier) there is real scope for this role to extend into a full-time permanent role or job-share (to cover Fenland) should this be something you are looking for.
We know we ask quite a lot, but you will be rewarded with working for a fantastic dedicated team and equally fantastic clients, who will ensure you have meaning and purpose to your career.

ABOUT US

Headway Cambridge and Peterborough is a specialist brain injury charity that works with adults with an acquired brain injury and stroke, as well as their loved ones across Cambridgeshire. Our aim is to support and empower all those affected by brain injury to come to terms with their new circumstances, re-integrate into family and community life, and maximize their opportunities, choices and independence.
We have established day support services across the County of Cambridgeshire where people can engage in group activities, cognitive workshops and much more. We are now looking for a special person to join our growing Community based team in Huntingdonshire (and Peterborough – optional).
We have a Hospital and Community Brain Injury Co-ordinator covering the Hunts and Peterborough areas providing specialist brain injury advice and signposting, helping individuals with a brain injury and their families to access much needed practical, financial and emotional support at each stage of their journey. Many of the individuals they support will be recently discharged from hospital and may be on a waiting list for Adult Social Care needs Assessments and/or are awaiting Community Neuro-rehab (Physio/OT/Speech) input. For others, they may not qualify for Statutory Support or Community Therapeutic input. These individuals may be living on their own with limited or no support provision and will need help to maintain the gains made in hospital and achieve their rehab / independence goals. This is where you come in.
In addition, some of the people you will be supporting may have had an historic brain injury years earlier and may have experienced a deterioration in their physical or psychological health / wellbeing thus requiring additional support to prevent further deterioration and to retain their independence for as long as possible.
Many of the people you will be helping may be living alone, socially isolated and marginalized. The impact of their brain injury may be physical (mobility, speech, fatigue, balance), Cognitive (memory, concentration, planning and organising) and/or emotional or behavioural. All of which impact on confidence and general wellbeing and present a barrier to progress, independence and accessing what life has to offer. Your role in their life is to identify their personal goals and objectives and help minimise the barriers to achieving these goals, helping them to lead as full and as meaningful a life as possible. You will be using your skills as a therapist to improve overall wellbeing and independence, liaising with the client’s GP and the wider MDT and implementing support strategies to maximise outcomes and improve quality of life.
No one day will be the same. You may be supporting one individual with their plans to return to work or education through the use of cognitive strategies and supporting another individual on making healthy meal and lifestyle choices. The next day you could be supporting an individual with their pain management, strength and mobility or another on their fatigue management and sleep hygiene.
If you choose to work the 3 days (1 day in Peterborough on a Wednesday) you will be ensuring our group sessions / workshops in our Neuro-Hub (these vary from Art/Crafts, Quizzes, Strategy exercises, mindfulness, seated exercise) have therapeutic outcomes so you must feel confident to design and lead on group programmes and sessions with a focus on independence and wellbeing goals and outcomes.
This is a varied role and consequently you must have experience of working within an MDT setting and with individuals with a range of disabilities (physical, psychological and cognitive) as part of their team supporting with independence and wellbeing goals. You must feel comfortable liaising with professionals, working on a one to one basis in peoples homes or in the community, goal setting, creating and working to therapeutic support plans and monitoring outcomes.
Training in understanding brain injury and the effects of brain injury will be provided (previous experience is desired but not essential). We are seeking a kind and experienced clinician / therapist with experience of working with vulnerable adults who can bring their additional skills and experience to the team.
