Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society (LFVAS) is an Indigenous-led non-profit organization, comprised of a dedicated group of individuals who promote, support, and advocate for services to meet the needs of Indigenous people in Langley, including an Aboriginal Head Start (AHS) centre. This all-day culturally safe childcare for children aged 3-5, respects and honours every child’s spiritual, emotional, intellectual, and physical growth while delivering culturally holistic teachings to foster a sense of belonging and well-being. LFVAS is accepting applications for Early Years Summer Worker to support our Early Years program in our AHS and other early years programing.
Reporting to the AHS Coordinator, the Indigenous Early Years Summer Worker will assist with AHS and early years program activities using an inclusive, family-centered, and strength-based approach. The Indigenous Early Years Summer Worker will shadow staff, and assist with facilitating safe, play-based intentional learning through culturally relevant and age-appropriate activities in accordance with the AHS curriculum. This position is ideal for a youth interested in human services, early childhood education, and/or a child development career.
TERM: Start ASAP, 8-9 weeks (280 hours)
HOURS OF WORK: 30 - 35 hours per week
WORK LOCATION: Langley- primarily Aldergrove.
COMPENSATION: $17.85/hour

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ages 16 - 30 and enrolled in school including high school or post secondary.
  • Interested in supporting families and children, with an emphasis on vulnerable populations. Relevant disciplines include early childhood development, social work, psychology, education, criminology, and public health
  • Experienced in Microsoft Office365 applications (e.g., Word, Excel, SharePoint, Outlook)
  • Emergency Child Care First Aid with CPR/AED Level B (Infant/Toddler) (or willing to complete)
  • Food Safe Level 1 Certificate (or willing to complete)
  • An understanding of cultural sensitivity and knowledge of Aboriginal culture, traditions and historical issues impacting urban Indigenous families.
  • The ability to perform moderate physical activities including but not limited to walking, standing, bending, kneeling, and lifting of children, toys and equipment
    *Class 5 BC Drivers License and vehicle (preferred)
    *Experience volunteering or working with children or youth or vulnerable populations is an asset
