FAMILY COUNSELLOR

This is a 1.0 FTE position,
effective immediately to June 30, 2026, or full return of the incumbent. The
focus of the Indigenous Family Counsellor is to provide school counselling
services to Indigenous students through a cultural lens, using cultural
resources and themes. The Indigenous Family Counsellor will utilize Indigenous
cultural practices to create a safe and caring setting for Indigenous students
that are seeking school counsellor supports.
This is an itinerant district
position with primary responsibility for schools in Kamloops and surrounding
communities. Direct service to students and consultative service to staff,
parents and administrators is provided in different schools and across a
variety of settings. Effective liaison with parents, teachers, administrators,
health care professionals and outside agencies is a critical aspect of this
position. Travel within the district is required. This position is excluded, the successful
candidate will not be a member of the KTTA or CUPE.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor
    of Social Work or a related Bachelor Degree; post – Baccalaureate education

preferred

  • Two

years direct counselling experience in an Indigenous environment

  • Demonstrated

counselling experience with elementary and secondary school students

  • Knowledge

of First Nations, Metis & Inuit history, culture, values, knowledge of the

historical and contemporary issues facing Indigenous families and communities

  • Valid

BC Driver’s License

  • Maintenance

of a professional membership, certification or registration in an association
that outlines professional ethics related to the provision of counselling
services

Responsibilities
  • Providing
    culturally-relevant school counselling and consultative services to Indigenous

students using Indigenous resources

  • Provision of

support for a student’s individual crisis such as a traumatic emotional

experience

  • Coordination,

planning, and facilitating Indigenous Girls’ or Boys’ Groups in elementary and

secondary schools

  • Consulting

with and coordinating referrals and counselling services with school district

staff and community professionals

  • Maintaining

student files in confidential cabinets in designated locations as per district

policy and procedure

  • Acting as a

community and family liaison for in school programming

  • Facilitating

referrals to outside agencies as needed

  • Facilitating

appropriate transportation for students to access support services

  • Attending

interagency case meeting, district screening meetings, case conferences and

school-based meetings, as requested

  • Providing

support for critical events involving Indigenous students upon request from

school district staff

  • Supporting

school transitions for individual Indigenous students

  • Providing

annual written reports and intermittently as requested

  • Providing

any other duties as requested
