Position Summary The SCA member will support both the Resource Management and Interpretation divisions at Chickasaw National Recreation Area. This project is designed to strengthen the connection between natural resource stewardship and public engagement by providing hands-on experience in field-based conservation work and environmental education. The individual will assist with vegetation and wildlife monitoring, invasive species management, and water quality sampling while also helping deliver interpretive programs, staff the front desk at the Travertine Nature Center, and provide visitor orientation and resource information. Through this dual role, the participant will gain practical conservation skills, develop public speaking and education experience, and learn how science-based resource management informs visitor understanding. The overall goal of the project is to support park resource protection efforts while enhancing meaningful visitor experiences. Location Sulphur, OK Schedule May 18, 2026 - October 9, 2026 Key Duties and Responsibilities * Assist Resource Management staff with vegetation monitoring, invasive species control, and habitat restoration projects * Support wildlife surveys, water quality sampling, and natural resource data collection and entry * Staff the front desk at the Travertine Nature Center, providing visitor orientation, trip planning assistance, answering the phone and resource information * Develop and present interpretive programs, including guided walks, talks, and Junior Ranger activities * Provide visitor use management support during peak visitation periods, including traffic direction and parking assistance to ensure visitor safety and resource protection * Assist with school groups, special events, and outreach programs * Support exhibit maintenance, educational materials preparation, and visitor services operations * Maintain a safe work environment and follow all National Park Service policies and procedures Marginal Duties * Assist with facility upkeep and light maintenance tasks within the Travertine Nature Center * Support preparation and cleanup for special events, programs, and volunteer workdays * Assist with basic administrative tasks, including filing, supply inventory, and program material organization * Support social media or digital outreach efforts as appropriate * Assist other park divisions as needed to support overall park operations * Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities Required Qualifications * Must be at least 18 years of age * Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a professional setting * Strong communication skills and comfort speaking with diverse audiences in a public-facing environment * Willingness to work outdoors in variable weather conditions, including heat, humidity, uneven terrain, and near water * Ability to hike up to 3 miles and lift/carry up to 40 pounds * Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a government vehicle (subject to successful completion of DOI driver requirements) * A personal vehicle is required * Ability to pass a federal background check * Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays during peak season * Interest in natural resources, environmental science, parks and recreation, interpretation, or a related field This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority. Preferred Qualifications * Coursework in biology, environmental science, natural resources, parks and recreation, interpretation, or a related field * Experience with public speaking, environmental education, or working with youth groups * Familiarity with Oklahoma ecosystems, native plants, and wildlife species * Experience with field data collection, basic monitoring protocols, or scientific research methods * Customer service experience in a visitor center, museum, retail, or public-facing setting; Experience working outdoors in hot, humid, or physically demanding conditions * CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain) Hours 40 per week Living Accommodations * Park housing is provided on-site at Chickasaw National Recreation Area at no cost to the member * Housing consists of a shared park residence with individual bedroom space and shared common areas including kitchen, living room, and bathroom facilities * Laundry facilities are available on-site or within the park * Member is responsible for maintaining cleanliness of shared living spaces and complying with all park housing policies and conduct expectations Compensation Living Allowance: $600/week; Relocation Allowance (paid once): $1,100 All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
