Industrial Engineer & Maintenance Manager Job Description
Position Overview
We’re looking for an experienced Industrial Engineer & Maintenance Manager to lead our maintenance operations and drive continuous improvement across our manufacturing facilities. This role combines strategic maintenance management with hands-on industrial engineering to optimise processes, control costs, and deliver measurable results.
The successful candidate will manage a maintenance budget that has been transformed from 150-200% overspend to consistently running 4-5% under budget, while maintaining 80-90% preventive maintenance completion rates and 70-80% plan compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance Management
- Lead maintenance operations across the manufacturing facilities
- Manage and optimise CMMS system - currently achieving 80-90% PM completion (up from 40%)
- Control maintenance budgets - maintain current performance of 40-50% under budget
- Drive preventive maintenance programmes with critical spares management to minimise equipment downtime
- Manage contractor relationships and permit control systems
- Implement safety protocols including Lock-out/Tag-out (LoTo) procedures
- Manage facilities and waste management systems
- Monitor and reduce the impact of orders not despatched due to machine breakdowns - currently £10,000-15,000 annually (reduced from £112,000)
Industrial Engineering & Process Improvement
- Identify and implement process improvements across manufacturing operations
- Develop and maintain manufacturing dashboards for real-time performance monitoring
- Conduct data analysis to drive decision-making and identify optimisation opportunities
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives using lean manufacturing principles
- Optimise production processes - recent achievement includes 10-15% powder coating efficiency improvement
- Implement factory simulations for production planning and optimisation
Capital Investment & Project Management
- Manage capital expenditure processes for projects £500,000 and above
- Lead project portfolios from initial scoping through to commissioning
- Develop business cases and manage tender processes
- Coordinate equipment commissioning and implementation
- Create and execute lean strategy frameworks
- Work with cross-functional teams to deliver projects on time and under budget
Key Performance Indicators
Financial Performance
- Maintain maintenance budgets at 4-5% under allocated spend
- Keep ONG maintenance costs below £15,000 annually
- Deliver capital projects within approved budgets and timelines
Operational Excellence
- Achieve 80-90% preventive maintenance completion rates
- Maintain 70-80% maintenance plan compliance
- Identify and implement process improvements with measurable efficiency gains
Safety & Compliance
- Maintain zero safety incidents in maintenance operations
- Ensure full compliance with permit control systems and LoTo procedures
- Meet all regulatory and internal safety standards
Essential Requirements
Experience & Background
- 5+ years in maintenance management or industrial engineering roles
- Proven track record of budget control and cost reduction in manufacturing environments
- Experience with CMMS systems - implementation, optimisation, and management
- Project management experience with capital projects £500,000+
- Manufacturing background - understanding of production processes and equipment
- Data analysis experience - creating dashboards and driving data-based decisions
Technical Skills
- CMMS software - planning, scheduling, and system management
- Data analysis tools - Excel, Power BI, or similar dashboard creation tools
- CAD software - AutoCAD and Fusion360
- Lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies
- Budget management and financial analysis
- Project management methodologies and tools
Qualifications
- Engineering qualification - HND/associate degree minimum, Bachelor’s preferred
- Relevant certifications - Lean, Six Sigma, or project management qualifications advantageous
- Trade background in mechanical/electrical disciplines preferred
