INDUSTRIAL MATERIAL RESEARCHER

We are looking for an Industrial Material Researcher with knowledge of applied material research, preferably with a background in mining and/or construction applications. The primary location for this role is Espoo or Kannonkoski, with the possibility of hybrid work. However, the job location could be negotiated.
In this role, you will focus on the study of industrial sidestreams and alkali-activated materials (AAM) as well as creating innovative research initiatives. The role involves conducting studies to explore the properties, performance, and sustainability aspects of blended cements and AAM. All Betolar’s researchers work together with engineers, data- and AI experts and in close collaboration with other cross-functional teams as well as with our clients.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • MSc or higher education in materials science, materials engineering, or related fields
  • Industrial experience preferably in construction and/or mining industries
  • Background in cement chemistry, geopolymers, and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and their industrial scalability is an advantage
  • Knowledge of environmental and technical challenges related to sustainable cement in construction and mining industries is a plus
  • Hands-on experience in materials testing, including qualitative and quantitative XRD analysis is considered an advantage
  • Ability to develop innovative solutions for construction and mining challenges
  • Self-motivated, proactive and adaptable in a fast-paced startup environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with diverse teams
  • Interest and adaptability in testing and utilizing new tools, including AI-assisted material research workflows
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively
  • Excellent communication skills, fluency in English (both written and spoken). Willingness to travel as required
Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive research on the usability of various industrial sidestreams for mining, construction and infrastructure related applications
  • Plan and execute physical, chemical, and durability testing of construction and mining products, ensuring compliance with industry standards
  • Develop cost-competitive and environmentally friendly mix designs utilizing locally available materials for industrial applications
  • Identify suitable applications for different industrial sidestreams based on material analyses and applicable regulations
  • Provide technical support to customers and sales teams regarding material applications and performance
  • Scale up lab-scale trials to production-level implementation, including pilot planning and quality control measures
  • Explore and promote the environmental benefits of blended cements and alkali-activated materials (AAM)
  • Actively contributes to a culture of continuous improvement through research, innovation, and knowledge sharing
