THE PERSON

  • Registered with NMBI (RNID, RGN, or RPN).
  • Minimum 2 years post-registration experience and eligible for an enhanced nurse role.
  • Higher Diploma (Level 8) in Infection Control (or willingness to undertake).
  • Strong knowledge of HIQA Standards, Health Act (2007), and disability sector policies.

    Job Purpose and Scope The aim of this role is to optimise service user care through the
    prevention, surveillance, liaison, education, research and control of
    Health Care Acquired Infections throughout the organisation
    Key Duties and Direct Care

Responsibilities

  • Act as a specialist adviser on matters pertaining to infection

prevention and control to all staff, service users and visitors.

  • Manage the implementation of the HIQA National Standards

for the prevention and control of healthcare-associated

infections within the organisation.

  • The implementation and maintenance of an effective infection

prevention and control programme within the organisation.

  • Collaborate with Risk office to review, analyse documentation

practices, identify areas for improvement, and implement
strategies to enhance the safety welfare of staff, service users

and visitors.

  • Manage own caseload in accordance with the needs of the

post.

  • Ensure safe water management systems through liaison with

Facilities and Estates management. Developing and

implementing strategies to control legionella growth.

  • Carry out monitoring of compliance with infection prevention

control policies and advise the management team on how to

address deficiencies where necessary.

  • Identify, communicate and investigate outbreaks (including

notifiable infections) and implement necessary control

measures to prevent reoccurrence.

  • Communicate significant laboratory reports to staff, instigating

appropriate action if necessary.

  • Liaise and network with outside organisations and individuals

as required.

  • Have clinical knowledge pertaining specific infection

prevention and control risks in services for people with an

intellectual disability.

  • Ensure that professional standards are met and upheld at all

times.

  • Chair the Infection Prevention and Control Committee, leading

meetings in line with terms of reference and to review, update,
and implement infection control policies and practices within

the organisation.

  • Conduct surveillance of antimicrobial resistance patterns to

identify trends, implement interventions, and prevent the

spread of resistant organisms.

  • Oversee and run the national vaccination programmes in the

organisation such as Influenza/COVID /Pneumonia.

  • Participate in health promotion initiatives to educate and

engage healthcare staff in infection prevention and control

  • practices.

Quality, Safety and Risk

  • Effectively discharge your role as Infection Control &

Prevention Nurse, in line with the requirements of HIQA,

the Health Act (2007) and associated Regulations.

  • Ensure that all Stewart Care policies and procedures are

in place, up to date and effectively implemented in your

areas of responsibility.

  • Ensure all necessary risks are escalated to your Divisional

Lead, through your line manager, in a timely manner.

  • Continually monitor and improve the quality of the

service, through observation and audit.

  • Ensure that quality improvement plans from all audits are

implemented effectively.

Audit

  • Critically appraise and evaluate infection prevention and

control practices through a structured audit programme,

as allocated by the Director of Nursing (or their appointee).

  • Conduct IPC audits to identify trends, areas of non-

compliance and opportunities for improvement.
Communicate the audit findings and recommendations to relevant
stakeholders in a clear and concise manner.

Education & Training

  • Support the delivery of teaching programmes for all disciplines and

grades of staff/management and service users within the service.

  • Willingness to undertake training as required by the organisation.
  • The Director of Nursing (or their appointee) may allocate the post

holder special projects to meet the needs of the organisation, as

appropriate.

  • Participate in relevant training programmes, expert groups,

conferences, and webinars to ensure that IPC measures practiced
within the organisation are based on
most current and evidence- based information.

Policy

  • Lead on the implementation, evaluation and updating of infection

prevention and control policies and practices within the service.

  • The Director of Nursing (or their appointee) may allocate the post

holder policies, procedures and guidelines, as appropriate.

  • Adhere to the policies and procedures of Stewarts Care.

Qualifications & • Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board

Experience of Ireland (NMBI) RNID/RGN/RPN.

registration education in the specialist area of Infection
Control at Higher Diploma level or equivalent (level 8) on

the NQAI framework

disability sector.

  • Have excellent computer literacy and information

technology skills.

  • Possess excellent report writing skills.
  • Have an up-to-date, valid Irish Driving Licence.

Terms and Conditions of Employment
Clinical Nurse Specialist - Dementia - Stewarts
Remuneration Remuneration is in accordance with the Department of Health
consolidated pay scales
Current Salary Scale: Clinical Nurse Manager 2.
Salary Scale: €59,661 to €75,389 per annum.
Salaries and increments are paid in accordance with DOH scales.
Annual leave 33 Calendar Days and 10 Public Holidays.
Working week The hours allocated to this post are 37.5 hours per week, exclusive of
lunch breaks. The allocation of these hours will be at the discretion of
the Director of Nursing/Programme Manager, or a person nominated
by them and in accordance with the needs of the service.
Probation All employees will be subject to a probationary period of 6 months,
with an extension if required to 9 months. This probationary period
applies to all employees irrespective of their role or type of role.
Garda Vetting Stewarts will carry out Garda vetting on all new employees. An
employee will not take up employment with the organisation until
the Garda Vetting process has been completed and the organisation
is satisfied that such an appointment does not pose a risk to the
service users and employees.
