Under the general supervision of the Unit Manager, provides clerical support in the patient care areas.

Responsibilities:

  • Verifies demographic and patient insurance information upon admission and updates this information during hospital stay as necessary; notifies appropriate personnel of discrepancies or problems.
  • Assembles, analyzes and maintains medical record through admission, transfer and discharge, ensuring that all relevant paperwork (e.g., test results) is filed accurately in a timely manner.
  • Communicates information to staff, patients and families.
  • Performs receptionist duties for the patient unit.
  • Performs information management functions, including entering patient data into computer and transmitting reports, utilizing computer systems effectively as they pertain to job responsibilities and in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Maintains inventory of unit supplies and equipment, reordering as necessary to maintain par levels.
  • Schedules patient appointments as directed and prepares necessary requests for patient procedures/tests and makes discharge and transfer arrangements for patients (e.g., appointments, special diets) as directed and in a timely fashion.
  • Communicates via phone and fax pertinent information relating to patients continuum of care (e.g., scheduling tests and obtaining results, scheduling outpatient appointments in Ambulatory Health Services, arranging for patient transportation).
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Answers telephone courteously and pleasantly; screens and/or routes calls effectively; takes accurate messages and repeats key information to verify accuracy.
  • Answers routine questions from patients and visitors on hospital policy accurately and courteously.
  • Assembles patient charts in a timely manner, checking that all required forms are present and replenishing forms as needed.
  • Makes clerical entries on patients’ clinical records (e.g., enters TPR data onto graph in patient’s chart); entries are accurate and completed in a timely manner.
  • Transcribes lab work from doctor’s order sheet onto laboratory test requisition forms; checks with supervisor/physician when information unclear.
  • Maintains accurate identification of all patients (e.g., prepares and attaches ID bracelets, verifies name against chart and ID band)).
  • Receives ordered items and checks against requisition, following up on discrepancies; stores items in designated areas promptly.
  • Sorts mail on a schedule acceptable to department, routing as necessary.
  • Indicates an Essential Job Function.

EDUCATION:

High school graduation or equivalent required.

EXPERIENCE:

1 year of administrative or financial experience in a health care environment preferred.

SKILLS:

Typing: 25 wpm (tested)
Basic familiarity with medical terminology.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Good interpersonal skills.
Speaks, reads and writes English to the extent required by the position.
Pay Range: USD $24.08 - USD $24.62 /Hr.
