POSITION OVERVIEW:

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Installation Plumbing and Hydronics Estimator to join our team. This role is responsible for preparing accurate estimates for plumbing and hydronic installation projects up to $500,000, while also supporting field execution through technical guidance, material coordination, and team leadership. The ideal candidate will possess a strong combination of field experience, estimating acumen, and leadership capabilities to help ensure the successful execution of commercial, institutional, and industrial projects.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary diploma in Mechanical or Construction Technology, OR
  • Journeyperson Plumbing Ticket (preferred)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in plumbing/hydronic system estimating and installation
  • Demonstrated experience with commercial, institutional, and industrial projects
  • Field and office estimating experience is required
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, hydronic layouts, and piping installation practices
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and contracts
  • Ability to perform accurate mathematical calculations and detailed labour assessments
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven time management, organization, and multi-tasking abilities
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and project teams
  • Comfortable using estimating and project management software

Responsibilities

Estimating and Pre-Construction:

  • Prepare quantity takeoffs and enter data into a computerized estimating system.
  • Interpret mechanical drawings and specifications—even when incomplete—to prepare accurate takeoffs and estimates.
  • Prepare budgets and detailed breakdowns of labour, material, equipment, and subcontractor pricing.
  • Review project documentation to develop strategic approaches to winning bids.
  • Finalize and submit bid packages ensuring all requirements are met.
  • Conduct site visits and attend pre-bid and post-bid meetings as required.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers and subcontractors to secure competitive pricing.
  • Analyze labour productivity and apply correction factors to account for project complexity and conditions.
  • Collaborate with project teams to review final cost reports for continuous improvement and historical tracking.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Project Collaboration and Execution Support:

  • Work closely with the Project Coordinator and Installation Technicians to ensure clarity on project scope, expectations, and timelines.
  • Assist with jobsite planning, including coordination of materials, tools, and equipment to support field efficiency.
  • Provide technical support and input during installation phases.
  • Support interpretation of design information and contribute to field-ready drawings by “drawing in” services or equipment for completeness.
  • Represent Haakon Mechanical Services professionally on-site and at client-facing meetings.

Team Leadership and Communication:

  • Offer on-the-job training, mentorship, and technical direction to junior technicians and apprentices.
  • Conduct monthly tailgate meetings with field teams to review safety protocols, share updates, and collect feedback.
  • Provide input and recommendations related to team performance evaluations and disciplinary actions.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with the Installation Manager regarding team performance, resource needs, and project challenges.
