Job Title: Behavioral Interventionist Assistant
Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt
Department: Special Education Department
Reports To: Special Education Department, Principal and Teacher(s) assigned
Approved By: Board of Trustees


SUMMARY:

Provide assistance to student(s) with behavior and/or physical challenges as assigned by Special Education Department. Assist in implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher and special education department administration.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or GED
Completed 48 college credit hours
Valid Texas educational aide certificate
Some experience working with children

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one small group situations to students and staff.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to work with children with disabilities. Knowledge of and ability to use wheelchair lift, ramps, personal computer, copier, typewriter, and audiovisual equipment. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to recognize and follow procedures when disruptive, abusive, or dangerous behavior occurs. Knowledge of behavior intervention strategies, applied behavioral analysis, developmental, emotional and behavioral disabilities. Knowledge of non-violent verbal and physical intervention techniques. Knowledge of first-aid skills. Ability to perform; duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
