GENERAL PURPOSE   Under the direction of the Programs Manager, is responsible for the development and facilitation of classes, events and/or workshops.     ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS   The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment.   1. Teaches participants in classes, activities, events and/or workshops where the instructor has direct knowledge and expertise. Assesses an individual’s and overall group’s proficiency level and modifies activity accordingly. Effectively communicates instructions, maintains a positive attitude, and generates enthusiasm at all times. 2. Demonstrates a general knowledge of facility programs, products, and services.  3. Assists supervisor with the development, promotion and organization of assigned classes. 4. Participates in the marketing of classes (e.g. responds to participant inquiries about other classes, programs, and services; refers to appropriate contact for follow-up). 5. Provides feedback about the program’s success and offers suggestions for improvement. 6. Responds to customer concerns and refers to management accordingly. 7. Keeps abreast of industry trends and BCHD programs. 8. Ensures proper classroom set-up and breakdown with allowed timeframe. 9. Adheres to District and departmental policies and procedures. 10.  Assists with the ongoing collection of customer evaluation and feedback.  11. Ensures all participants in the class have registered with the front desk staff. 12. Takes attendance of participants for each class that they teach (fee-based classes only). 13. Promotes safety throughout the facility by keeping all areas neat and tidy, cleaning up spills or other hazards, notifying a supervisor of a safety concern that requires immediate attention, etc. 14. Serves as a positive role model by consistently maintaining a positive and helpful attitude with parents, children, management and co-workers. 15. Participates in open houses, community events, and special events. 16. Performs assigned training, duties, and work schedule as a disaster service worker on behalf of BCHD. 17. Exhibits clear understanding of the history, mission, and vision and serves as an ambassador of Beach Cities Health District. 18. Exemplifies BCHD’s core values of compassion, integrity, accountability, and excellence in every interaction with staff, volunteers and members and the public. 19. Strives to eliminate barriers to diversity; ensures that new barriers to diversity are not built.     QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES   Any combination equivalent to experience, education, and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying.   A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:   EDUCATION/TRAINING:   High School Diploma or equivalent. Some college education is highly desirable.     EXPERIENCE:   Minimum of one-year prior experience working with targeted age group, or satisfactory completion of observation hours at BCHD. Prior class-instructor teaching experience in specialized area of expertise (e.g. Pilates, yoga, specialty classes).      CERTIFICATION: Minimum certification requirements:   1. Current group-exercise instructor or leader certification, that is accredited by the NCCA, ISO 17024, or a similar approved accrediting body.   b. Certificate of completion or specialty certificates from a reputable organization for each specialized group modality that the instructor teaches.     KNOWLEDGE:   Knowledge of tailoring an individualized program and group programming accordingly, knowledge of Medical Fitness Association (MFA) standards; marketing and sales techniques a plus.     ABILITIES/SKILLS:   Ability to build community relationships and represent BCHD core values. Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with a diverse range of people. Ability to inspire, encourage and motivate clients and help them stay on track with their fitness goals and demonstrate emotional intelligence and empathy.     SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:   Must be 18 years of age. First Aid, Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) methods; appropriate safety precautions and procedures; simple record keeping procedures.  Must be able to successfully pass background check, tuberculosis test and drug screen. May require additional industry-recognized certifications, where applicable, in order to comply with certifying organization standards.  Position may require some evening and weekend work.       PHYSICAL STANDARDS   Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.     PHYSICAL AND SENSORY ELEMENTS:   This position requires hearing, talking, and seeing. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee uses finger dexterity in order to operate computer hardware for extended periods of time.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to continuously engage in a series of physical activities needed to effectively teach classes and provide instruction. This includes, but is not limited to a combination of jumping, flexing, sitting, bending, stooping, stretching, grasping, reaching, lifting, tilting back, walking, and standing (100% of the time during training sessions or classes).  Must be able to perform visual assessment of participants and their surrounding area 100% of time.     ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS:   The employee typically works indoors with controlled temperature conditions; the noise level is frequently quiet or moderately quiet, at or below 85 decibels.  When monitoring health and fitness programs and activities, the noise level can exceed 85 decibels during group activities.
