INSTRUCTOR/LIFEGUARD 1 AND JUNIOR INSTRUCTOR/LIFEGUARD

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to the work.
- Ability to demonstrate competence in established procedures and related training.
- Ability to respond to minor and major first aid and lifesaving situations in aquatic facilities.
- Ability to teach water safety and aquatic skills to patrons ranging in age and abilities and provide effective in-class feedback and written reports.
- Working knowledge of pool chemistry and maintenance equipment and procedures.
- Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to be courteous to others in situations of conflict or disagreement.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to prevent and address infractions of pool rules and regulations with professionalism.
- Ability to prioritize competing demands.
- Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of charts, records and reports related to the work.
- Ability to successfully pass a Police Information Check.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
The Instructor/Lifeguard 1 position requires: Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent supplemented by a minimum of 500 hours of related lifeguarding experience and courses in lifesaving, aquatic skills, instruction and pool operations and maintenance as required for the certifications listed below.
- Minimum age of sixteen (16) years old
- National Lifeguard Pool Option current within two (2) years
- National Lifeguard Waterpark Option current within two (2) years
- Standard First Aid and CPR-C/AED current within three (3) years
- Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor current within two (2) years
- Lifesaving Instructor current within two (2) years*
- required for Instructor/Lifeguard 1 only
Candidates without Grade 12 or 500 hours experience may be considered for Auxiliary Junior Instructor/Lifeguard employment.
SKILL SCREENING:
The screening and orientation are mandatory. Each successful candidate will also need to attend a shadow shift at each facility on one of the following dates:
Screening: Sunday, October 20th: 8am-12pm at Watermania
Orientation: Tuesday, November 19th: 4-9pm at Minoru
Must be available to attend a shadow shift at each facility:
Minoru:
- Saturday, November 23rd: 8am-12pm
- Saturday, November 23rd: 2pm-6pm
- Sunday, November 24th: 8am-12pm
Watermania:
- Tuesday, November 26th: 3:45pm-7:45pm
- Saturday, November 30th: 8am-12pm
- Sunday, December 1st: 8am-12pm
Responsibilities:
- Performs lifeguarding duties and participate in responses to aquatic emergencies.
- Teaches swimming lessons to a variety of ages and skill levels.
- Performs routine tasks associated with daily maintenance of the pool, deck and change rooms.
- Responds to clients’ inquiries, concerns, and complaints.
- Assists the Instructor/Lifeguard 2 as required on-deck or with administrative tasks.
- Prepares and maintains work records.
- Instructor/Lifeguard 1s may orient and mentor Junior Instructor/Lifeguards.
