KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to the work.
  • Ability to demonstrate competence and provide direction in established procedures and related training.
  • Ability to respond to minor and major first aid and lifesaving situations in aquatic facilities.
  • Ability to provide direction and feedback to various aquatic staff in life safety, teaching, and maintenance duties assigning and assisting in the work as required.
  • Ability to ensure adequate coverage for shifts and monitor teaching staff schedules.
  • Ability to instruct water safety and aquatic skills to patrons ranging in age and abilities and provide effective in-class feedback and written reports.
  • Working knowledge of pool chemistry and maintenance equipment and procedures.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to be courteous to others in situations of conflict or disagreement.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to prevent and address infractions of pool rules and regulations with professionalism.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of charts, records and reports related to the work.
  • Ability to maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Knowledge and skill in using City computer applications such as PerfectMind Registration System, Outlook and Microsoft programs.
  • Ability to use REDMS or a similar records management system.
  • Ability to successfully pass a Police Information Check.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, supplemented by more than one (1) year of related lifeguard/instructor experience, and courses in lifesaving, aquatic skills, instruction and pool operations and maintenance as required for the certifications listed below.
  • National Lifeguard Pool Option current within two (2) years
  • National Lifeguard Waterpark Option current within two (2) years
  • CPR-C/AED current within three (3) years
  • Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor current within two (2) years
  • Lifesaving Instructor current within two (2) years*
  • WHMIS training is required for the positions and will be provided to all staff.
Responsibilities
  • Performs lifeguarding duties and participates in and oversees responses to aquatic emergencies.
  • Provide on-shift direction and leadership to Junior Instructor/Lifeguard and Instructor/Lifeguard 1s, including oversight of operations on assigned shifts, monitoring quality of instructional programs including lesson plans and delivery, ensuring adequate staff coverage for shifts, providing input into performance evaluations as required, providing corrective feedback to staff and conducting in-service training segments.
  • Teaches swimming lessons to a variety of ages and skill levels.
  • Performs and supervises a variety of routine tasks associated with the daily maintenance of the pool, deck and change rooms.
  • Prepares and maintains work records.
