Description

Oberland Agriscience is a sustainable black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) farm in Halifax, NS. We are focused on closing the food loop in our region and making a positive contribution to our planet. Oberland’s high-performing team rears BSFL in our zero-waste facility and delivers exceptional productivity per hectare yielding a nutrient-rich, low environmental impact protein. Partnering with local food producers and distributors, Oberland upcycles organic by-products such as spent grains from your favourite craft brewery to grow BSFL on an industrial scale. Oberland continues to play a role in a more sustainable circular economy in our region.
Deploying an organic by-products-to-alternate protein approach, Oberland produces several insect-derived products. Oberland generates high-quality sustainable protein from larvae and a fertilizer product for home gardens and agricultural lands. #closingthefoodloopa
We are looking for a technician who can bridge the worlds of Operational Technology (OT) and shop-floor software support. This role is ideal for someone with a solid understanding of how production equipment communicates and who enjoys solving practical problems at the point of use, right on the factory floor.
The person in this role will work directly with operators, production managers, and technical staff to ensure that production software, end-user devices, and automation systems are running smoothly and reliably. They play a crucial role in ensuring that production doesn’t grind to a halt due to minor, but frustrating, software or device issues. They will be the go-to person when something’s not working right on the floor, and their ability to calmly, methodically resolve issues will have a direct impact on uptime, efficiency, and team confidence.
This role is supported by the VP Operations
Key Responsibilities:
Infrastructure 100%

Production Software Troubleshooting

  • Provide hands-on support for proprietary production and manufacturing software used on tablets, industrial PCs, HMIs, and barcode terminals.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve user-facing issues, such as missing lot numbers, failed work order entries, barcode scanning errors, or unresponsive software on shop-floor devices.
  • Liaise with software vendors or internal development teams when escalations are required.

Shop-Floor Device Support

  • Configure and maintain production-end devices, including touchscreens, thin clients, label printers, barcode scanners, and PCs.
  • Ensure that updates, drivers, and settings are applied correctly to avoid disruptions in workflow.
  • Assist with deploying new hardware and basic setup for manufacturing stations.

Production Software Integration & Support

  • Work closely with production, OT, and IT teams to ensure that the correct software and versions are deployed to each workstation.
  • Support operators in using these systems effectively, including training when necessary.
  • Help identify and resolve connectivity or performance issues that interfere with system responsiveness or data capture.

PLC & Profinet Awareness (Basic Level)

  • Understand the basics of how PLCs and sensors interact with shop-floor systems.
  • Be able to identify when an issue may stem from the control layer (e.g., PLC communication loss) and assist in first-level diagnostics or escalate accordingly.
  • Support systems connected via Profinet, even if not directly programming PLCs.

Documentation & Improvement

  • Maintain clear logs of troubleshooting steps and resolutions.
  • Update or create checklists, troubleshooting guides, and quick-start references for common issues.
  • Suggest small process or system changes that improve reliability or reduce operator confusion.

What You Bring:

  • Experience working in a manufacturing or production environment.
  • Familiarity with industrial software systems, such as MES or custom production tracking applications.
  • Practical troubleshooting skills with PCs, HMIs, label printers, scanners, and other industrial devices.
  • Basic understanding of how automation systems (e.g. PLCs and sensors) integrate with shop-floor software.
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills, able to effectively help people with a wide range of technical abilities.
  • Detail-oriented with a willingness to roll up sleeves to get things working.

Nice to Have:

  • Exposure to Profinet or other industrial networking protocols.
  • Familiarity with PLCs (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley) from a user-support perspective.
  • Previous experience supporting barcode systems or lot-tracking environments.
  • Experience supporting or training shop-floor users in fast-paced production settings.

Oberland strives to create a diverse inclusive working environment that supports a strong sense of belonging on the team. We are committed to reviewing all applications objectively and without bias.
