The Intergovernmental Relations (IGR) Branch of Executive Council coordinates Alberta’s engagement with other Canadian governments in pursuit of outcomes that enhance Alberta’s status as an equal partner in the federation and achieve a federal system that better serves Albertans’ needs. IGR is responsible for supporting the Premier’s intergovernmental agenda, missions, and meetings. To that end, IGR works with ministries to ensure a coordinated and consistent approach to intergovernmental relations. IGR also reviews and approves all of Alberta’s intergovernmental agreements to ensure they are consistent with Alberta’s goals and objectives.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A university degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Canadian History or a related discipline, supplemented by 2 years of related experience.
  • Equivalencies may be considered. Such as:
  • A diploma in a related discipline and 4 years of related experience.
  • A certificiate and 5 years of related experience.
  • A strong understanding of Canada’s federal system, political institutions, and constitutional framework—typically supported by a degree in Political Science, Canadian Studies, or a related field.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary research and policy development.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills tailored to diverse audiences.
  • Analytical acumen to interpret complex legal and policy documents and develop strategic recommendations.
  • A collaborative mindset and ability to work across departments and jurisdictions.
  • The ability to meet tight deadlines when necessary.
  • A willingness to take initiative and provide proactive insight into potential concerns, or research.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

As an Intergovernmental Officer, you’ll play a vital role in Alberta’s intergovernmental strategy. You’ll support the Premier and senior officials in national forums, provide timely and strategic analysis, and ensure Alberta’s interests are effectively represented across Canada. The successful candidate will:

  • Monitor and analyze political and policy developments and initiative across Canada with specific consideration for implications on Alberta.
  • Particpate in policy recommendations and strategices concerning issues in federalism and constitutional details as they emerge.
  • Prepare briefing materials and speaking notes for the Premier and senior officials.
  • Support Alberta’s participation in key intergovernmental meetings, such as the Council of the Federation, the Western Premiers’ Conference, the New West Partnership and First Ministers’ meetings.
  • Collaborate with government ministries and external stakeholders to ensure Alberta’s priorities are effectively represented.
  • Ensure the government is fully informed to respond to public and intergovernmental develpments, helping to shape Alberta’s policy communications.
