Job Description
Title: Interim Director of Athletics for the Ashland Public Schools

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Licensed, or eligible for licensure by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (Supervisor/Director license preferred), and Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA)
  2. Bachelor’s Degree Required, Master’s Degree Preferred
  3. Teaching experience and experience coaching at the varsity high school level are preferred. Experience in athletic administration is a plus
  4. Strong communication, organization, and leadership skills
  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the High School Principal and/or the Superintendent may find appropriate and in conformity with state and federal law.

Responsibilities
  1. Organizes and administers the overall program for Grades 6-12 of interscholastic sports.
  2. Provides leadership in the selection, assignment, and evaluation of athletic coaches and staff members.
  3. Fosters good school-community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the athletic programs.
  4. Sets a vision for the athletic department that coincides with district goals and mission
  5. Develops leadership opportunities for student-athletes
  6. Develops and maintains an Athletic Handbook
  7. Communicates regularly with student-athletes, faculty members, parents, and the community.
  8. Works with the Ashland Clocker Club to support interscholastic athletics
  9. Assumes responsibility for the organization and scheduling of all interscholastic athletic events
  10. Hires officials, team physicians, and police officers as required, and assumes general responsibility for the proper supervision of home games and practices.
  11. Arranges transportation for athletic contest participants.
  12. Develops and places into operation appropriate rules and regulations governing the conduct of athletic activities, intramurals, and extracurricular activities.
  13. Implements any physical and academic requirements of eligibility for participation in each sport or activity, and verifies each student’s eligibility in accordance with any MIAA and/or School Committee policies, regulations, or procedures.
  14. Prepares and administers the athletic budget and submits it to the High School Principal and the Superintendent of Schools.
  15. Annually evaluates athletic fees with support from the Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations.
  16. Requisitions, in cooperation with appropriate staff members, supplies, uniforms, and equipment for athletic programs.
  17. Supervises the cleaning, storage, and care of all athletic equipment and supplies. 18. Supervises all ticket sales and fundraising events connected with the athletic and assumes responsibility for proper handling and accounting of money involved. 19. Arranges all details of visiting teams’ needs, including lodging, meals, towels, gymnasium services, and field assistance as appropriate.
  18. Assists the Director of Facilities in the management, supervision, and maintenance planning of fields and athletic facilities.
  19. Provides an opportunity for the physical examination of all athletes prior to the beginning of each sports season.
  20. Keeps records of the results of all middle school and high school athletic contests, and maintains a record file of all award winners, stating the date and type of award, including athletic scholarships.
  21. Evaluates annually, in cooperation with the building principal(s), all interscholastic sports and makes recommendations for future improvements.
  22. Evaluates, in cooperation with the building principal(s), the performance of all coaches at the conclusion of each season or activity.
  23. Performs other duties as assigned by the High School Principal or his/her designee.
