EDUCATION

  • A post-secondary technology diploma or engineering degree or equivalent, specializing in electronics, electrical or controls technology.

EXPERIENCE

  • Three years’ experience in electrical control systems design, preferably in the industrial automation field.
  • Strong knowledge of low-voltage distribution systems for automated machinery, including schematics, cablerouting diagrams, panel layouts, and bills of materials.
  • Hands-on experience with EPLAN design software (EPLAN 2022 or later).
  • Proficiency in electrical machinery standards, including NFPA 70/79, CSA C22.1, and UL 508A.
  • Strong understanding of safety standards such as EN ISO 13849 and EN 62061.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply customer-specific controls design standards.
  • Working knowledge in performing engineering design calculations, including full-load amperage, short-circuitcurrent ratings, and panel heat loss/cooling assessments.
  • Experience integrating third-party equipment, including vision systems, motion control products, and robots, intoelectrical designs.
Responsibilities

MAJOR DUTIES

Controls Systems Hardware Designer is part of a dynamic cross functional automation design team working on theworlds most challenging automation projects for a diverse customer base. In this role, you will produce completecontrols solutions and electrical design packages based on customer specifications and standardized designpractices used at ATS.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with mechanical designers during mechanical design process to design a control system that will enable the machine to perform its intended function safely and reliably.
  • Formulate and produce complete electrical design package, which includes detailed schematics, cable routing diagrams, panel layouts, bills of materials and material requisition forms, based on ATS standard specifications and the customers’ requirements.
  • Work with other members of the Controls Engineering Department and other groups to continuously improve methods of integrating controls technology, with the goals being enhanced safety, enhanced functionality and reduced cost.
  • Work with other members of the Controls Engineering Department and other groups to ensure that labour budgets and material budgets are adhered to or improved upon.
  • Specify all electrical and controls-related hardware and software and produce requisition forms for material purchases.
  • Integrate third party equipment and electronic component entry into electrical design package. Examples include serial communications, hardware handshaking, opto-isolation, electrical and ultrasonic welding applications, vision systems, motion control products, transducers and signal conditioners.
  • Verify that electrical design package is complete, accurate and safe based on sound design practices and accepted standards, and that the I/O lists meet program requirements prior to issue to shop floor.
  • Work with customers, project managers, designers, toolmakers and electricians to solve problems in order to provide the customer with a complete, functional system.
  • Work with other members of the Controls Engineering Department and other groups to continuously improve methods of integrating controls technology.
  • Provide customers with training specific to their current project (i.e. electrical hardware, machine operation, programming principles, program functionality and program structure).
  • Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
