IPS offers full services to all private sectors for assistance with official plan amendments, zoning by-law amendments, site plans, subdivision agreements, master plans, community improvement plans, budget creation and review, development review, public consultation, conflict resolution, urban design, drafting and more. There is an opportunity in either of our Vaughan or Barrie offices as an Intermediate Land Use Planner. Candidates applying for this position with IPS should have the following qualifications:

  • University degree in Urban Planning or related discipline
  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience with knowledge of the Planning process and the legislative and policy framework in Ontario
  • Eligibility as a full member of the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI)
  • Strong knowledge of planning principles and relevant legislation, an understanding of land development, municipal policies and development approval processes, and solid experience with development layout and design principles.
  • Strong project management, report writing and personal time management capabilities.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, problem-solving, report writing and organizational skills, with the ability to shift priorities and work independently
  • Highly motivated, flexible, enthusiastic, team player committed to providing high quality service to our clients. You must also be willing to engage with your project teams and be prepared to mentor and guide other staff.

Required Skills:

  • Discuss various planning projects with the general public, elected officials, agents, developers and Conservation Authorities.
  • Manage complex municipal development applications through the Planning Act process such as minor variances, severances zoning by-law amendments, official plan amendments, plans of subdivision/condominium and site plan agreements. Submissions to the Approval Authority.
  • Creative input into Subdivision / Site design including parks, trails, active transportation, energy conservation, stormwater management, waste management, and environmental features such as woodlands, wetlands, watercourses, slope and erosion hazards, etc.
  • Preparation of planning briefs, reports and other related planning documents as required for various development issues.
  • Prepare for and present at Committee of Adjustment hearing and public meetings
  • Attend Planning and Development meetings.
  • Assist in the preparation of materials for Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT) hearings
  • Perform Zoning By-law reviews.
  • Review sub-consultant reports, including Functional Servicing, Stormwater Management, Geotechnical, Hydrogeological, Environmental Impact, Environmental Site Assessment, Species at Risk, etc.
  • Project management, including coordination of multi-disciplinary project teams.
  • Preparation of and making presentations to various Committees and Council.
