POSITION OVERVIEW:

This posting is for an Intermediate or Senior Biologist with a focus on wildlife who will be an integral part of the growing AJM team. The successful candidate(s) will be responsible for managing and/or implementing wildlife field programs of varied purpose, scope and scale. Supporting other bio-physical disciplines may also be a reality, depending on the successful candidate and role. The following characteristics appeal to the ideal candidate:

SPECIFIC SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS WE ARE LOOKING FOR INCLUDE:

  • Minimum of B.Sc. in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related discipline;
  • Registered, or working towards registering as a Professional Biologist in Alberta and/or BC is preferred;
  • Three to five-plus years (depending on the role) of relevant industry environmental experience, consulting experience preferred;
  • Solid bird identification and wildlife assessment skills, and a desire to continue to learn;
  • A self-starter who thrives in a demanding environment working both as part of a team and independently, and a willingness to go the extra mile;
  • Great communication skills and strong technical writing competencies;
  • Strong experience and knowledge of oil sands and industrial operations will be considered an asset;
  • Experience providing guidance to management and/or operations personnel;
  • Existing applicable technical and safety training certifications will be considered an asset;
  • Ability to learn new technology (and have fun while doing so!);
  • Working knowledge of relevant provincial and federal legislation and policies;
  • Ability to work remotely for extended periods;
  • A desire to get hands dirty in the field;
  • Ability to prioritize competing initiatives, anticipate potential problems and deal with ambiguity;
  • Experience providing guidance, mentorship and support to junior staff;
  • Excellent organizational skills and a strong sense of accountability
  • A strong track record in health and safety;
  • A valid class 5 driver’s license, a clean driving record and minimum 3 years auto insurance history;
  • Willingness to support other bio-physical discipline tasks as needed; and
  • An entrepreneurial spirit!
Responsibilities

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Lead the design, planning and/or implementation of field programs, including wildlife assessments
  • Conduct fieldwork in a safe, efficient, and technically defensible manner;
  • Lead wildlife management efforts, including mitigating risks and interfacing with regulatory agencies;
  • Manage or lead field crews and take ownership of crew safety including leading by example and mentoring junior staff on safety;
  • Provide mentorship to junior staff while in field and office, passing on best practices / lessons learned and supporting in the development of their technical and non-technical skills
  • Analyze or supervise field data synthesis, including collection and QA/QC processes, and submit required reports to meet regulatory requirements;
  • Provide strategic guidance on wildlife management, regulatory approvals, and wildlife assessments;
  • Communicate clearly and succinctly (written and oral) to convey environmental considerations and results to clients;
  • Collaborate with teammates, clients’ teams, operational staff, and other stakeholders;
  • Identify and pursue business development opportunities, contributing to proposals, project scoping, and strategic planning;
  • Serve as a primary client contact, providing expert recommendations and fostering long-term relationships;
  • Maintain technical skills through formal and on-the-job opportunities; and
  • Work independently, often outside of office hours, to meet challenging deadlines and client requests.
