Canadian National Railway Company (CN) is looking for a highly motivated person to fulfill a full-time (40h/week) Intern, Data Operations position in Montreal, QC from May - Aug 2025.
Job Summary
The Intern, Data Operations is responsible for the successful analysis and management of the data information generated by technologies, services, and systems within CN or outside CN. The role ensures that all business requirements are met by team members and projects and contributes to the global evolution of CN’s Information and Technology (I&T). The role works in collaboration with Data Scientist, Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) and Development Operations (DevOps) teams to build and improve full-time automated data solutions between systems in the cloud. Furthermore, the incumbent is involved in building test code, design and optimised monitoring tools.
Major Responsibilities
Collaborate with experienced data engineering professionals and global team members
Participate in designing and implementing data warehousing solutions
Develop and maintain the Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) processes to ensure efficient data flow
Contribute to data modelling efforts for optimized database structures
Assist in building and maintaining data pipelines for real-time and batch processing
Conduct quality assurance checks to ensure data accuracy and consistency
Explore and utilize big data technologies for scalable data processing
Create visually appealing data visualizations to communicate insights effectively
Stay current with industry trends and developments in cloud computing, big data, and Azure Databricks
Requirements
Proficient in programming languages such as Python, Java, or Structured Query Language (SQL) and familiarity with tools like Spark
Familiarity with database management systems (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) and Data Lake concepts
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, essential for effective collaboration and conveying complex concepts
Ability to work independently and as part of a team, showcasing adaptability and strong teamwork capabilities
Experience in Positive Train Control (PTC) and the rail industry*
Internet of Things (IoT) and MLOps experience*
Data Analyst or Engineering Certification (e.g., Azure, Databricks, Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or another platform)*
Education

Working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related fields, demonstrating a strong commitment to continuous learning and professional growth
