It is one of the largest pure-play producers and exporters of thermal coal in South Africa based on aggregate coal reserves and marketable coal production. Thungela focuses on exporting its thermal coal portfolio mainly to the Indian, Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle East and North African markets. Job Description Lead and manage comprehensive audits and expert consultation to ensure compliance, mitigate risks, and enhance operational control effectiveness, leading assurance governance responsibilities and assurance responsibilities within the technology portfolio, fostering confidence in organisational processes, controls and outcomes. The focus areas for this role will be to manage and co-ordinate the following: Performance & Delivery Lead and manage comprehensive audits and expert consultation to ensure compliance, mitigate risks and enhance operational control effectiveness. • Plan, conduct, and oversee audits to ensure compliance and mitigate risks. Develop comprehensive audit objectives and scopes tailored to each audit. Assess and prioritise risks associated with the audit focus, with strict adherence to Internal Audit standards throughout the audit process. Compose concise audit reports that encapsulate findings and recommendations, integrating supporting data and evidence to validate conclusions, and deliver these reports to the Head of Risk and Assurance as well as relevant stakeholders for comprehension and endorsement. Create detailed time-based budgets and audit programmes to guide the audit process. • Conduct examinations of specialised operations to ensure adherence to statutes, policies, and best practices, providing expert consultation. Evaluate compliance with relevant statutes, policies, and procedures within specialised operations, assessing the effectiveness and efficiency of operational practices, and offering expert consultation and guidance to departments on matters of compliance and best practices. • Contribute to the development and execution of the annual audit plan, with a focus on specialised areas. Assist in the formulation of the annual audit plan, considering specialised areas of expertise. Participate in the execution of audits within portfolio, ensuring thorough coverage and compliance. Contribute insights and expertise to the risk assessment process for audit planning purposes. • Analyse audit results and provide recommendations for improvement related to applicable internal controls. Analyse audit findings to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. Develop actionable recommendations in collaboration with stakeholders to address identified limitations and enhance operational effectiveness. • Monitor and assess the implementation of audit recommendations. Follow up on audit recommendations to track progress and implementation status. Evaluate the effectiveness of implemented changes in addressing identified control deficiencies. Provide feedback on the success of implemented changes and identify any additional support or adjustments needed. Lead the assurance governance responsibilities for the internal assurance team. • Assess the overall efficacy of governance, risk, and internal control frameworks. • Deliver actionable insights and suggestions for bolstering the control environment's effectiveness. • Engage stakeholders to implement recommendations derived from audit findings. • Spearhead the development and implementation of technology solutions within Group Internal Audit. Investigate and assess emerging technologies for their potential to streamline audit processes and enhance efficiency. Lead the conceptualisation, development, and deployment of technology solutions like GRC systems, Robotics, AI, and Machine Learning within internal audit. Deliver training and support to audit teams to effectively adopt and leverage technology solutions. Lead the execution of assurance responsibilities within the technology portfolio • Report on significant emerging technology challenges affecting Group processes. Identify and prioritise emerging technology concerns potentially impacting Group operations or the control environment. Work alongside relevant stakeholders to devise and execute solutions for mitigating emerging technology risks. Provide regular management and governing body updates on emerging technology issues and the progress of their resolution. • Collaborate with stakeholders to plan and execute audit projects related to technology, ensuring they meet management expectations and deliver outcomes and recommendations in relation to the applicable frameworks i.e. ITGC • Prepare documentation for submission to regulatory bodies and committees, including executive risk reports, assurance plans, and progress reports specific to technological risks and controls • Manage tip-off lines proficiently and oversee investigations to ensure timely and thorough resolution of reported concerns while maintaining confidentiality and integrity standards Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in financial accounting, audit, or related field (NQF level 7) Advantageous: CA (SA) / CPrac (SA) / CIA Knowledge and Experience • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in Financial Accounting, Internal Audit or related field • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in working with electronic audit files. • Experience in auditing approaches and methodologies. Operations: • Knowledge of relevant legislation applicable to Thungela incl: Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, No 28 of 2002 Companies Act, No 71 of 2008 Protection of Personal Information Act, No 3 of 2013 Sarbanes-Oxley Act • Proficient knowledge of the use of technology in managing compliance and assurance. • Proficient knowledge of the Information Technology General Controls and IT GRC. • Proficient knowledge of the GRC platform’s Internal Audit & Risk modules.
