Duties and Responsibilities
The International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) was established to assist in the investigation and prosecution of persons responsible for the most serious crimes under international law committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011. This internship is located within the Information Systems Management Section (ISMS). The intern will work closely with an Information Management Officer and Associate Legal Officer of the ISMS. The objectives of the internship are to: - Support with tasks related to internet research. - Research methodologies and synthesize relevant literature related to issues of interest. - Assist with tasks relating to information governance. The intern will be responsible for supporting ISMS on issues of information management, and in particular, internet research. Tasks will include: - Conducting targeted open-source research and analysis. - Researching and summarising political, economic, social, technological, and legal issues related to the current Syrian situation. - Developing frameworks and processes related to information governance. - Compiling any relevant research and analysis into a final presentation for the IIIM. The intern will also be responsible for the following: - Completing assigned tasks in a timely and accurate manner. - Meeting deadlines and responding to instructions promptly. - Maintaining confidentiality of all records and information accessed during the internship. - Working independently and as part of a team. - Demonstrating professionalism and respect for colleagues and stakeholders. Assignments will not involve any work directly with evidentiary material in the IIIM’s Central Repository of Information and Evidence. A IIIM internship is unpaid and full time (40 hours). Working hours are 09:00-18:00.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required such digital diplomacy, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and/or information governance is an advantage. Is your field of study one of the above, or another closely related field? Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor’s or equivalent), master’s or Ph.D. programme or equivalent, or have completed a bachelor’s, master’s or Ph.D. programme. Do you meet any of the these criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of Arabic is an advantage.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
