Job description The European Centre for Press and Media Freedom is looking for a Digital Communications Intern to support our communications work across ECPMF projects and platforms. ECPMF works to protect and promote press and media freedom across Europe. Through practical support, advocacy, monitoring, legal assistance, emergency relocation, and programmes for journalists in exile, we respond to threats against journalists and help defend independent media as a public good. Our work includes projects such as the Media Freedom Rapid Response, Journalists-in-Residence programme, legal support for journalists, support for journalists in exile, cross-border investigative journalism initiatives, and public-facing campaigns on press freedom, safety, SLAPPs, exile, and democratic resilience. The internship offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in digital communications within an international press freedom organisation. The intern will support day-to-day communications tasks, help prepare digital content for different platforms, and contribute to the visibility of ECPMF’s projects, events, publications, and advocacy work. Responsibilities Key tasks The intern will support ECPMF’s communications team in preparing and publishing digital content across ECPMF channels, including several websites, newsletters, and social media platforms. Tasks may include supporting website updates, drafting and editing social media posts, preparing visuals and short video content, assisting with newsletter production, helping maintain communication calendars, and contributing to the promotion of ECPMF projects, events, calls, reports, statements, and public campaigns. The role includes basic media monitoring, research for communications purposes, preparing social media assets, updating contact lists, supporting event communications, collecting analytics, and helping evaluate the performance of digital content. Daily responsibilities Draft and adapt content for ECPMF’s social media channels, website, newsletters, and other digital formats. Support the preparation of visual materials for campaigns, events, calls, reports, and public statements. Assist with website updates and publication workflows using content management systems. Help monitor press freedom developments and identify relevant communication opportunities. Contribute to the planning and scheduling of digital content across platforms. Assist with collecting basic performance data and analytics from social media, newsletters, and the website. Support the communications team with administrative and organisational tasks linked to key events, and publications. Your profile We are looking for a motivated person with an interest in press freedom, journalism, human rights, European affairs, digital communications, or civil society work. The ideal candidate has strong writing skills in English, an interest in social media and digital storytelling, and the ability to communicate complex topics clearly and responsibly. They should be organised, detail-oriented, and comfortable working on several tasks at the same time. Experience with digital tools such as WordPress or another CMS, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Mailchimp or other newsletter tools, basic analytics tools, or social media scheduling platforms would be an asset, but is not required. Previous experience in communications, journalism, advocacy, NGOs, media, or student initiatives is welcome. Key requirements Enrolled into a German University. Excellent knowledge of English and German. Strong interest in press freedom, journalism, human rights, democracy, or European civil society. Good understanding of social media platforms and digital communication formats. Ability to write clearly, accurately, and with attention to tone. Good organisational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work independently. What you can expect from us We offer A three-month internship with EUR 590 per month in an international organisation working at the centre of press and media freedom in Europe. Practical experience in digital communications, advocacy campaigns, project communications, and public-facing storytelling.
