Te Whiwhinga Mahi | The Opportunity 12-month fixed-term contract We are excited to offer a unique 12-month internship at the Port of Auckland for an individual from Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, which will provide a fantastic opportunity to develop practical skills while contributing to the Port of Auckland Tāmaki Herenga Waka and Māori outcomes initiatives. Reporting to the Māori Outcomes Manager at the Port of Auckland, this role spans key areas including container terminal operations, marine, sustainability, and Māori cultural initiatives. It is an amazing opportunity to work with one of our key Strategic Partners and springboard your skill set and confidence. Key Responsibilities Container Terminal Operations & Marine: Complete Stevedoring Lashing training and work within the Stevedoring team to safely load and unload containers. Assist the Marine team with safe vessel berthing procedures. Sustainability & Māori Outcomes: Contribute to harbour health initiatives, including administration, reporting, and hands-on execution. Support the implementation of the Taura Herenga Waka (Māori Outcomes Framework) to promote Tikanga and Te Reo. Work alongside internal teams and contractors to advance sustainability and Māori outcomes projects. Personal Development: Participate in the Te Ara Rangatira (Emerging Leaders) programme and attend workshops. Engage in the mentoring programme and contribute to both the port’s operations and the Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei community. What we are looking for from you: A good work ethic 5+ years in an operational working environment (ideally within construction, logistics, or trade sectors) Availability to work a 24/7 shift roster. Computer skills (outlook, word, excel, etc.) Driver’s licence preferred A successful pre-employment check (Ministry of Justice, Health, References) A reasonable level of physical fitness A safety mindset And ideally; The ability to transition from an office to an operational space An interest in sustainability and the marine industry Competencies Cultural Competency Stakeholder Engagement Willingness to learn Collaboration Administration & digital literacy Flexibility Hours of Work Due to the nature of the internship a high level of flexibility will be required to meet the requirements of the position. In general, the hours of work will be 40 hours per week, however, to meet operational business requirements work may be required to be carried out in the weekend, evenings, nights and public holidays on a rostered basis. You would also be rostered to fulfill Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei iwi engagements once a month. It is anticipated that this role will start in mid January 2026.
