General Job Description:

  • Communicating succinctly and accurately not only the content and but also the style of statements;
  • Reading papers and preparing support materials beforehand;
  • Emulating the inflections and intonations of the speaker, in order to reinforce the meaning and stresses of the speaker’s words (but not emulating the gestures made by the speakers as they have already been seen);
  • Reflecting the person’s way of speaking as accurately as possible. The community interpreter will interpret obscenities and colloquial language and will not simplify the language used.
  • Ability to use standard Microsoft Office product application such as Word, Excel, Outlook, & Publisher.

Qualifications:

  • Prepare for course work through means such as consultation with instructors, reading the assignments, and previewing educational video tapes;
  • Informally assess student language skills and share pertinent findings with teachers;
  • Introduce themselves to the general education staff prior to the first class meeting;
  • Work with the general education teacher, H.I. (and student if age appropriate) to determine the best physical placement of the interpreter and student;
  • In conjunction with the H.I. teacher, explain the interpreter role to the general education staff;
  • Assume other in-school interpreting responsibilities such as: parent conferences, testing, disciplinary situations, counseling, field trips, etc.. to the assigned student;
  • Work as a part of the educational team;
