DESCRIPTION

We are looking for an IT Infrastructure Engineer to support and develop our core IT systems and infrastructure.
The successful candidate will be able to implement equipment installation plans based on the agreed specifications, maintain each component of the network, and troubleshoot issues.
The Infrastructure Engineer will be responsible for monitoring the infrastructure, assessing the functionality of the servers, ensuring all software is updated regularly and providing support to projects where required.
You will be working with the business and firmwide departments to understand their key business strategies and drivers and to help address these through innovative and pioneering solutions.
Working hours: Monday to Friday full time. In addition to usual hours of work, you will be on call, and you must be flexible to work additional hours on evenings and weekends will be required for emergency cover and systems maintenance.
Office Location: Derby head office with remote and onsite support as required at our other offices

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE

  • Proven experience in an IT infrastructure or systems engineering role, ideally within a professional services or legal environment.
  • Strong technical expertise across a range of infrastructure technologies, including:
  • Microsoft 365, Azure AD, Intune, Exchange Online
  • Windows Server (2016/2019/2022,2025), Active Directory, Group Policy
  • Virtualisation technologies
  • Networking (firewalls, switches, VPN, DNS, DHCP)
  • Backup and disaster recovery tools
  • Scripting and automation experience desirable
  • Experience with ITIL-based support practices and change management processes
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement abilities

Responsibilities
  • Leading in at least two technical disciplines
  • Implementing new network technologies, both hardware and software, into the firm’s IT infrastructure
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies and solutions in line with business needs and industry best practices
  • Maintain, monitor, and support on-premises and cloud infrastructure (servers, storage, networking, virtualisation, backups).
  • Support the firm’s security infrastructure (firewalls, VPNs, endpoint protection, vulnerability scanning).
  • Perform regular system updates, patching, and capacity planning
  • Lead or assist with infrastructure-related projects (e.g., system upgrades, migrations, disaster recovery testing)
  • Investigating and diagnosing network related incidents escalated from the Service Desk/IT Support
  • Documenting system configurations, processes and policies clearly and accurately
  • Resolving IT support incidents and service requests within agreed SLA targets
  • Maintaining regular communication with service users
  • Updating Service Desk systems in accordance with internal procedures
  • On-site Support
  • Collaborate with third-party support and service vendors to ensure that the infrastructure stays operational, secure and performing at acceptable levels
  • Escalation to management of incidents
  • Ongoing technical coaching for self and others
  • Advising all IT staff on specialist areas
  • Delivers activities to support operational objectives for their role
  • Inputs to planning activities with horizons of typically up to 6 months
  • Makes technical recommendations using specialist experience
  • Interacts with suppliers, other support groups and users around specific work efforts, project timescales and deliverables
  • Supervises the activities of other IT staff to meet deadlines and quality standards taking account of impact outside area of responsibility
  • Focus of work on the completion of a set of related tasks for a particular section or service with the ability to accommodate new tasks
  • Support operations as appropriate both within and outside of normal operating hours
