Description

Position Summary:
MDIBL is looking for an IT Manager to play a vital role in supporting and advancing the IT infrastructure that powers our scientific mission. The incumbent will be the in-house IT expert overseeing a breadth of technology services across labs, administrative buildings, housing, and classrooms. Your work will impact everyone—from scientists to support staff to students on campus.
Why Join Us?
This position provides an opportunity to make a tangible impact at an institution deeply committed to science and education. Work in a collaborative, creative, mission-driven environment surrounded by Maine’s dramatic coastal beauty. Build and own an IT infrastructure across domains, with real autonomy and influence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide empathetic, effective support to users across a wide range of technical skill levels.
  • Maintain and administer Windows, macOS, and Linux systems; virtualized environments; VMware infrastructure; NetApp and similar data storage; backup solutions (Veeam, NetBackup).
  • Manage cloud services including Microsoft 365, Zoom, and AWS; oversee identity and access using Active Directory.
  • Administer campus-wide networking across ~30 buildings using technologies like Cisco, Ruckus Wi-Fi, Fortigate firewalls, and OpenVPN.
  • Support audio-visual systems in classrooms and event venues; manage telephone and surveillance systems.
  • Promote and enhance IT security and quickly respond to incidents. Maintain and develop IT-related standards, policies and procedures.
  • Lead procurement—specifying, budgeting, and purchasing all IT and AV equipment; managing vendor relationships.
  • Create clear documentation and instructional materials tailored to a mixed-skill user community.
  • Mentor and oversee a small IT team.

Qualifications and required skills:

  • Broad experience in systems administration, networking, IT security, and end-user support (Windows and Mac).
  • Skilled at managing diverse technologies in a small organization setting.
  • Strong communicator—clear with technical and non-technical audiences alike.
  • Experienced in cloud services, virtualization, active directory, storage systems, and backup tools.
  • Calm, adaptable, and problem-solving oriented.
  • Experience managing small teams and leading IT-related projects is a plus.

Other requirements

  • Occasional work outside of normal business hours is required.
