QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Proven experience (5+ years) in a Product Owner or similar role focused on business services applications.
  • Strong understanding of business services functions such as finance systems (e.g. ERP), HR, supply chain platforms, or asset management systems.
  • Solid grasp of Agile methodologies (Scrum, SAFe) and experience working in cross-functional delivery teams.
  • Skilled in writing user stories, prioritising backlogs, and managing product lifecycle.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to balance diverse business needs.
  • Ability to translate complex business problems into simple, digital solutions.
  • Data-literate and able to engage with reporting, analytics, and master data topics.
  • Experience with modern SaaS platforms and integrations (e.g. SAP, Dynamics)
  • Familiarity with change management, digital transformation, and enterprise architecture principles.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams including developers, designers, QA, and business stakeholders.
  • Experience within the transportation, travel, or mobility sectors is desirable.

Responsibilities

ROLE OVERVIEW

Calmac Ferries Limited (CFL) is a ferries and port operations business with 1,800 staff and turnover of more than £350m. We operate 33 ferries across 31 routes and 50 ports, carrying 5 million passengers and 1 million vehicles each year.
CFL are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Product Owner to lead the sourcing, development and optimisation of digital and technology solutions that support core business services such as Finance, Asset Management, Supply Chain, and HR. This is a strategic role within the IT function of a major transportation sector organisation, responsible for aligning product roadmaps with business goals and ensuring that IT products deliver measurable value.
The IT Product Owner (Business Services) will act as the voice of the business services functions working closely with internal stakeholders, IT teams, and external partners to ensure that the right technology and digital products are sourced, built/implemented to continuously improve to business services operational excellence and transformation.
The IT Product Owner will require to have strong experience in managing delivery of technology and digital solutions in a highly available operational environment combined with a publicly visible brand.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Own the IT product vision, roadmap, and backlog for digital and technology solutions in business services domains (e.g.finance, asset management, supply chain, HR).
  • Work closely with business stakeholders to understand needs, pain points, and strategic priorities.
  • Work in partnership with the Supply Chain team to source technology and digital solutions that meet the needs of business stakeholders
  • Translate business requirements into clear user stories and acceptance criteria for development/procurement
  • Prioritise the product backlog based on value, risk, and delivery dependencies.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between business stakeholders and delivery teams (internal and external).
  • Champion digital innovation and identify opportunities to modernise legacy systems or optimise existing processes using technology.
  • Lead product discovery efforts and facilitate workshops and interviews to elicit requirements.
  • Collaborate with UX/UI designers, developers, analysts, and testers to deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Track KPIs and business outcomes to ensure product success and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure that products are compliant with data protection, cybersecurity, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support change management, training, and communication to ensure smooth product adoption.
