We’re seeking an experienced IT Specialist to provide on-site support at the Mescalero Service Unit within the Albuquerque Area Indian Health Service (IHS). This role plays a critical part in maintaining secure, reliable, and efficient IT systems that support the operational and healthcare functions. Position Overview The IT Specialist will be responsible for the effective installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of computer systems, network hardware, and software infrastructure. This position ensures the integrity and availability of IT systems and provides comprehensive support to end users. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, system administration experience, and a proactive approach to maintaining optimal IT performance. Key Responsibilities Systems Administration & Maintenance Install, configure, and maintain servers, hardware, peripherals, and operating systems in alignment with organizational and IHS standards. Perform regular system upgrades, patches, and configuration updates to maintain system integrity. Manage CPU, memory, and disk partitions to ensure resource optimization. Oversee data center operations, monitoring all systems and equipment to ensure uptime and reliability. Network & Security Operations Maintain network and server security, ensuring compliance with organizational IT policies and federal guidelines. Conduct regular monitoring to verify system and hardware integrity and prevent unauthorized access. Perform data backup and recovery operations, ensuring the protection and availability of critical information. Create, modify, and delete user accounts and permissions as needed. Technical Support & Troubleshooting Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and connectivity issues promptly. Coordinate and collaborate with IT team members and end users to deliver efficient technical assistance. Provide user training and guidance on new systems or processes when necessary. Develop and maintain IT documentation, including system configurations, maintenance logs, and progress reports. Compliance & Reporting Submit bi-weekly progress reports to the supervising officer (COR or equivalent). Ensure all activities comply with organizational IT policies, data security standards, and applicable federal regulations (HIPAA, FISMA, NIST, etc.). Adhere to background check, fingerprinting, and training requirements in compliance with IHS and Arrow Alliance policies. Requirements Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent professional experience). Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in IT system administration, preferably in healthcare or federal environments. Proficiency in Windows systems, networking protocols, and server infrastructure. Experience with healthcare IT systems such as RPMS and EHR preferred. Knowledge of backup/recovery solutions, network security, and data management. Certifications: CompTIA A+, Network+, or equivalent certifications preferred. Must pass federal background checks and meet suitability requirements. Ability to complete required federal and facility-specific IT training (e.g., ISSA, Fraud, Waste & Abuse, Protecting Children from Sexual Abuse). Commitment to data confidentiality, accuracy, and integrity. Work Conditions Schedule: Monday through Friday, up to 40 hours per week (excluding federal holidays).
