REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or job-related field and one (1) year of recent related experience. Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the appropriate knowledge, and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Equivalent amounts of graduate level job related education may be substituted for the required experience.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA’S) –

  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Ability to understand and relay general information about campus programs and services, particularly those that support students with dependents—while adhering to established procedures.
  • Awareness of the challenges faced by non-traditional students, such as student-parents, and ability to support their inclusion and success on campus.
  • Knowledge and ability to support students with dependents in a higher education setting.
  • Ability to assess student needs and refer them to appropriate campus resources or programs.
  • Ability to apply established procedures to address common student concerns effectively.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries in a helpful, respectful, and informed manner, especially in sensitive situations involving parenting or caregiving responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.

  • Master’s degree in educational counseling, Student Affairs, or related field.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment possessing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: LIGHT WORK – involves mainly sitting, up to 25% standing or walking; lifting medium weight objects limited to 25 pounds.

Responsibilities

Student-Parent Programming Support

  • Support the coordination of educational workshops and programs in collaboration with ASI and other student service departments (e.g., Center for Accessibility and Essential Needs).
  • Assist in planning and scheduling events for students with dependents, including presentations and tabling during resource fairs.
  • Assist with collecting feedback from students on existing programs and share findings with supervisor to support future planning.
  • Assist with providing general information during resource fairs and other campus events.
  • Help compile informational materials for distribution at CSUB and CSUB-AV.

Communication Support

  • Respond to basic inquiries from students with dependents and refer them to appropriate campus and community services.
  • Maintain and distribute resource guides and referral materials for students with dependents.
  • Assist in the preparation of email and social media updates using approved templates.

Data Collection Support

  • Assist with gathering basic data on student-parent initiatives and support programs to be shared with ASI Board of Directors once a month.
  • Gather and organize background information on CSU and state resources related to student-parents using provided guidelines. Assist with communicating general information on resources.

Website Support

  • Assist in updating student-parent information on the department’s webpages using provided content.
  • Work with IT or communications staff to ensure accessibility and accuracy of posted resources.
  • Review web content for outdated links or missing information and notify supervisor for follow-up as needed.
