JOB DESCRIPTION
Our Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls group (EI&C) is seeking a Junior Automation and Controls Designer to join our team. The successful candidate will be a team oriented and driven individual who will focus on ensuring that our client’s needs are met. This position requires coordination with engineering, design, and drafting teams within a multi-discipline project environment to solve challenging problems and produce the solid, dependable designs our clients expect. Excellent communications, problem solving, and organizational skills are considered an asset.
Key Responsibilities:
· Assist in the programming and configuration of PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) systems for automation applications.
· Support the design, development, and modification of HMI (Human-Machine Interface) screens for operator control and monitoring.
· Participate in the setup and testing of SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems for real-time data monitoring.
· Collaborate with senior engineers to troubleshoot and resolve automation-related issues.
· Support system integration tasks, including connecting sensors, actuators, and other industrial equipment.
· Learn to read and interpret electrical schematics, process flow diagrams, and technical documentation.
· Support control panel design and produce associated drawings (e.g. panel fabrication, power distribution, wiring and schematics).
· Assist in commissioning and debugging automation systems at customer sites or in the lab.
· Participate in continuous learning and development activities to stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate should have the following qualifications:
· A diploma in electrical system design, or similar, from an accredited technical institution such as NBCC. University graduates with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering will also be considered.
· Familiarity with PLC programming languages (e.g., Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Block Diagram) or a strong desire to learn.
· Basic understanding of industrial automation systems, such as PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems.
· Strong problem-solving skills and a keen interest in learning new technologies.
· Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
· Good communication skills and the ability to interact with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
· A proactive attitude toward learning and skill development in automation.
· Previous experience in the Food and Beverage, Pulp and Paper, and Power Generation sectors would be considered an asset.
· Previous software development experience would be an asset.
· Previous experience with using AutoCAD to create technical drawings would be an asset.
· A valid driver’s license is required for travel to our client’s sites.
