Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) operates and maintains the Angus L. Macdonald and A. Murray MacKay Bridges, facilitating over 34 million crossings annually. Reporting to the Senior Bridge Engineer, the Junior Civil / Structural Engineer position will offer the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects and collaborate closely with bridge engineers and the Engineering Department Manager at HHB. This successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on bridge inspections, investigations, construction supervision, quality assurance, project management and contract administration. The successful candidate will have experience with reading drawings for concrete and steel structures. Experience with inspection, supervision of rehabilitation works, or new construction of bridges or other types of structures. You will join a team that takes pride in its ability to work together to plan, monitor, complete, and close challenging bridge rehabilitation projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering - Civil engineering preferred
  • Registration or eligibility for registration with Engineers Nova Scotia as an Engineer-In-Training.
  • Minimum one (1) year and maximum five (5) years of relevant experience, knowledge of current design codes of practice, including Bridge Code (CSA S6-19), Concrete Code (CSA A23.3), and Steel Code (CSA S16)
  • Strong computer skills (MS Office, AutoCad, and MS Project)
  • Ability to effectively represent HHB in front of contractors, consultants and other authorities.
  • Knowledge about the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) acts and regulations.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to write effective reports and meeting records.
  • Possess good problem-solving skills using standard engineering methods
  • Capable of handling multiple tasks simultaneously and have good time management skills.
  • Experience on construction sites and dealing with contractors/consultants would be an asset
  • An understanding of the commitment required to meet project requirements, including working during nighttime and weekends if required.
    Salary range: $56,129 - $70,161 | Hiring 1 position | Full-time, Permanent, Non-Union | Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM (35 hours per week)

Responsibilities
  • Prepare tender documents and specifications
  • Review/comment on drawings prepared by consultants
  • Prepare sketches and drawings
  • Day-to-day liaison with consultants, contractors, vendors, and other authorities etc.
  • Prepare meeting records for tender processes, project progress, etc.
  • Prepare project schedules and estimates
  • Perform field engineering and site inspections
  • Prepare inspection reports
  • Prepare communication emails
  • Monitor the quality control processes and perform quality assurance tasks for steel, concrete, asphalt, and coating projects
  • Review shop drawings, technical data sheets, work methods, and other project submittals
  • Perform safety audits, and generate safety observations when needed
  • Use project management software to distribute, receive and control project documentation
  • Draft responses for Request for Information (RFIs)
  • Update tracking sheets for tracking recommendations from inspections
  • Drive an HHB-provided vehicle when needed for inspections and site visits
  • Coordinate Traffic Control, equipment rental and Rescue Teams when needed for internal HHB inspections
  • Update the asset management system with the condition ratings from annual and detailed inspections
