This is two full-time positions on the Tier 1 rota for 12 months. The post holder will need to be able to work a full shift pattern including a variety of evening shifts, night shifts and weekend long days to meet the needs of the department.
Shift patterns incorporate working weekday normal days (08:45 – 17:00hrs), weekday late shifts (11:00 – 21:30hrs), weekday and weekend long days (09:00 to 21:30hrs) and nights (21:00 – 09:30hrs). The rota is compatible with the terms and conditions of the 2016 Junior Doctor Contract.
There is a resident senior paediatrician at all times (either ST3 – 8 or consultant) as well as an off-site on-call consultant paediatrician.
The day-to-day work of the Tier 1 post varies according to need. Time will be split between providing cover to the Children’s Ward, NNU and Day Assessment Unit, as well as having opportunities to attend children’s out-patient clinics run by senior paediatricians.
On the Children’s Ward, responsibilities will include regular ward rounds, clinical and administrative tasks, led by the middle grade or Duty Consultant of the Week. All patients are discussed at the general handover before the morning ward round. A senior paediatrician is expected to supervise the Tier 1 doctor and either discuss or personally review all new children presenting to the department within 4hours of arrival, as per RCPCH standards.
On the neonatal unit, the Tier 1 doctor attends the daily ward round and are responsible for basic clinical and administrative tasks. They attend deliveries when requested and review babies on the postnatal ward for routine newborn physical examination or if clinical concern arises. There is also the opportunity to become involved in discussion of cases antenatally, and to contribute to perinatal mortality and morbidity meetings.
When covering the Day Assessment Unit, the doctor will work alongside the middle grade in the assessment of new referrals from primary care and the emergency department as well as reviewing ward attenders.
Attendance at out-patient clinic is encouraged for education and training purposes.
