Junior Hydrogeologist / Environmental Engineer – Calgary
Higher Ground Consulting (HGC) is seeking a junior hydrogeologist or environmental engineer to support our Environment and Regulatory team starting in May 2025. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in both field and office-based settings, with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers throughout the lifecycle of projects. The successful applicant can expect to work in a fast-paced environment on various projects while receiving training and mentorship from experienced multi-disciplinary personnel.
NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS
· Interest and appreciation of groundwater, surface water, and society’s relationship with the ecosystem
· Bachelor’s Degree in Hydrogeology, Environmental Engineering, or an applicable Environmental Science, along with up to 4 yrs related experience
· Adaptable to a flexible work schedule and willing to travel to project sites and work out of town as needed including:
o Ability to travel to locations for up to two weeks at a time
o Willingness to work overtime if field programs require
o Capable of working in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow, while maintaining safety and productivity.
o This role may require prolonged periods of physical activity and exposure to uneven terrain or other environmental factors.
· Ability to learn quickly and take on new challenges
· Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
· Familiarity with computers, including Microsoft Office programs
· Must be legally entitled to work in Canada and have a valid Class 5 driver’s licence
· Registered or eligible for registration as “in training” (e.g. Geol.I.T, E.I.T, etc.) with applicable professional registration body (e.g. APEGA or other applicable regulatory body)
· Work closely with project managers and other technical staff to plan, organize and execute environmental field programs such as surface water monitoring, groundwater monitoring, soil sampling, test pitting, borehole drilling, groundwater monitoring well installation and other environmental monitoring programs
· Work up to 2 weeks at a time in the field, actively contributing to various tasks and projects while adhering to safety protocols and guidelines
· Demonstrate a passionate interest in environmental science, contributing positively to team dynamics and project goals
· Working in tandem with and training indigenous partners and communities on western science as well as learning from their experience and knowledge
· Receive mentorship and training from experienced professionals to develop their own career
· Support with project management and project coordination
· Environmental data management, analysis, and presentation in report format
· Aid in the preparation of technical documents
· Mapping and figure development
