Job Description We are seeking a motivated mechatronics engineer to contribute to the North Area Consolidation (NA-CONS) program, focusing on renovating and enhancing Beam Intercepting Devices (BIDs) controls and algorithms to improve reliability, predictive maintenance, and monitoring tools for piquet interventions. You will support upgrade and commissioning activities during Long Shutdown 3, take part in the design, development and integration of control systems, participate in functional testing, and contribute to diagnostics and high-level software tools to ensure reliable and maintainable BID operation in CERN's North Area. Your responsibilities Develop and deploy control system solutions for Beam Intercepting Devices as part of the North Area Consolidation (NA-CONS) program. Contribute to system integration, functional testing, and commissioning of BID equipment, ensuring reliable local and remote operation. Design, implement, and optimise control and monitoring algorithms to improve reliability, enable predictive maintenance, and support piquet interventions. Develop and maintain high-level software interfaces and APIs, ensuring robust communication between control layers and external systems. Implement and enhance monitoring and diagnostic tools, supporting operational teams and improving long-term system maintainability. Your profile Hands-on experience in control systems, testing, and commissioning of electromechanical systems. Solid understanding of hardware-software integration in large-scale experimental or industrial environments. Experience with API development and high-level software integration for distributed control systems. Hands-on experience in testing, functional verification, and commissioning of control or electromechanical systems. Experience working in a team, communicating effectively, and documenting, with a proactive and structured approach to collaborative development. Skills Proficiency in PLC programming, C++, or Python for control, automation, and high-level software integration. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and field-testing skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex system issues. Familiarity with configuration management, version control tools (e.g. Git), and software deployment workflows. Understanding of integration of hardware and software components within complex experimental infrastructures. Strong debugging, problem-solving, and technical writing skills. Ability to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary teams and contribute to shared software and system developments. Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French. Eligibility criteria: You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State. By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechatronics Engineering (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree. You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before. Applicants without University degree are not eligible. Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.
