As a Junior Operator under the direction of the Senior or Intermediate Water Operator, you will participate in activities specific to the drinking water system. Primary duties include:

  • Learn the components of Water Quality (learn how to take samples, how to perform chlorination) or public health in relation to drinking water.
  • Learn and execute the processes for maintenance and/or repair of the drinking water system.
  • Learn and apply components of public health and safety related to drinking water management.
  • Perform assigned inspection, assessment activities and maintenance activities.
  • Responsible for assigned repairs to the system infrastructure.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED) with at least 2 years of utility experience; OR
  • A completed 1 year technical certificate in Water and Wastewater (i.e. NAIT) and no experience; OR
  • A completed 2 year Diploma in Water Engineering Technology (Water and Wastewater option i.e. Okanagan College) and no experience.
  • A valid full Class 5 Driver’s License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits, and no current suspensions or charges pending.
  • Must be able to obtain Level 1 Water Operator Certification within 2 years.
  • Education related to drinking water or wastewater systems is preferred.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with the ability and willingness to use software and desktop or remote devices.
  • Interpersonal and adaptability skills are required for success in this position.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • A security clearance will be conducted.
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator’s permit.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
