Ronald McDonald House Charities® Alberta (RMHC Alberta) is passionate about providing a home away from home for families with seriously ill or injured children who must travel for medical care.
We know that a family with a sick child is a sick family.  Our Ronald McDonald Houses provide a warm, compassionate and comfortable environment where families can share experiences, receive respite and distraction, eat a warm homemade meal and rest, all while caring for their child at the hospital next door.
RMHC Alberta is part of a global network of Houses, Family Rooms, Care Mobiles and Comfort Carts prioritizing family-centered care through delivery of our unique core programs. RMHC Alberta operates four Houses offering private family suites, and Comfort Carts that deliver bedside services in hospital. 
We’re currently engaged in a multi-year, $80M capital campaign to reduce the service gap by tripling our capacity in Calgary and Edmonton. Construction on an expanded facility in Calgary is completed and increased the number of suites from 27 to 91. The facility is 105,000 square feet, offering family suites and a multitude of common areas that enhance the family experience within our communal living environment. Tentatively Edmonton will expand from 36 suites to approximately 100 suites. The expansion critical path in its entirety is 5-7 years.

Your Role
The Kitchen Assistant will assist the Executive Chef with the Home for Dinner meal program, co-managing kitchen operations, supervising and stewarding kitchen volunteers and ensuring the highest quality of food preparation and presentation.
This is a part-time position based out of the Calgary Ronald McDonald House. The schedule will be 4 shifts per week, 2 dedicated shifts Monday and Sunday from 3pm-8pm, the remaining 2 shifts will be mostly evenings from 3pm-8pm with a chance of one morning shift 9am-1pm a week, totalling 20 hours per week.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with Kitchen Management: support the Executive Chef in overseeing daily kitchen operations, including menu planning, inventory control, safety and sanitation and volunteer management.
  • Train, mentor and supervise kitchen personnel to maintain high standards of food quality and safety.
  • Prepare and cook food according to recipes and menu specifications, ensuring consistency and presentation.
  • Monitor food quality during preparation and service, ensuring dishes meet high standards.
  • Ensure all food safety and sanitation standards are met in the kitchen.
  • Work closely with the Executive Chef to create menu items and seasonal offerings.
  • Address any kitchen issues or concerns promptly and effectively.
  • Provide orientation and day of assistance & stewardship to all local Home for Dinner groups in the absence of the Executive Chef.
  • Work alongside the Executive Chef, assisting in the stocking of our Grab & Go Fridge and our Family Kitchen.
  • Dishes, cleaning and sanitizing sinks and counters, sweeping and mopping floors, taking out garbage as a part of the kitchen closing duties daily.
  • Ensure all the necessary documentation is filled daily.
  • All other tasks as required.

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years’ experience in a professional kitchen.
  • Strong knowledge of culinary techniques and kitchen equipment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills.
  • Passion for food and commitment to quality.
  • Must provide a clear criminal record.

Nice to Haves

  • Advanced Food Safe Certification, HACCP, Standard First Aid CPR-C and AED certification.
  • Experience in a healthcare setting
