Job Description:
Position Purpose Summary:
Reporting to the Food Services Manager, this position focuses on serving and maintaining the dining room, maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards, and providing general support to the kitchen operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in preparing and serving meals, as well as setting up the dining room.
  • Ensures the safety of clients and staff by following proper handling of food according to food standards.
  • Follows legislative procedures and Salvation Army standards for cleaning and sanitizing dishes, equipment and work surfaces.
  • Maintains cleanliness of kitchen and dining room (washing dishes, cleaning dining room tables, kitchen and dining room floors, and other kitchen equipment).
  • Keeps simple records and completes incident reports as necessary.
  • Assist with receiving and stocking food and kitchen supply orders.
  • May prepare simple foods and drinks.
  • Attends staff meetings and mandatory training.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is in a commercial kitchen within a men’s shelter.
  • Shifts include weekends and shift schedules alternate between: Morning shift - 6:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. and Late Shift: 11:00 A.N and 7:30 P.M.
  • Long hours standing on hard surfaces.
  • Work is in close proximity to others in a fast-paced and sometimes crowded environment. The work can be physically taxing and requires good mobility.
  • Use of various cleaning chemicals and tools (ex: broom, mop, vacuum, etc.).
  • Use of kitchen tools and appliances (ex: knives, stove/oven, dishwasher, etc.)
  • This position requires individuals to wear appropriate footwear and clothing.

Education, Experience and Qualifications:

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Some high school completion.
  • Food Safe Certification is required.
  • Up to 3 months of related experience is an asset.

Required Skills and Capabilities:

  • Able to work on Weekends, Morning Shift: 6- 14:30, and Late Shift: 11-19:30
  • Always maintain exceptional personal cleanliness.
  • Handwashing and use of provided personal protective equipment (gloves, aprons, etc.) is mandatory.
  • Adhere to safe food handling procedures, including proper storage, preparation, and cooking methods to prevent cross-contamination and foodborne illnesses.
  • Operate all kitchen equipment safely and responsibly, adhering to proper usage guidelines to prevent accidents.
  • Understand and abide by hazard communication protocols, including the correct use and storage of cleaning chemicals and potential allergen identification.
  • Apply proper lifting and carrying techniques for heavy items to avoid physical strain or injury.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Capability to adapt to changing circumstances in a fast-paced kitchen environment.

Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $16.50 to $20.62 with a maximum of $24.74.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
