JOB SUMMARY:

A kitchen porter performs supportive work to help keep kitchens running on schedule and within food safety regulations. Here are some of their general responsibilities:

  • Receiving deliveries: Porters receive and unpack all deliveries, ensuring all food and supplies are correctly placed
  • Inventory support: Porters help kitchen managers manage inventory by organizing food storage and telling them when items need to be ordered
  • Basic food preparation: They help chefs and cooks prepare meals by washing, peeling and cutting ingredients.
  • Washing dishes, equipment and utensils: Kitchen porters ensure that equipment and dishes are cleaned, sanitized and ready to prepare and serve food.
  • Sanitizing kitchen surfaces: They sanitize counters, stovetops and other places where food is prepared to meet health regulations.
  • General cleaning: They sweep and mop the floors, wipe out trash cans, change garbage liners and clean and organize food storage.
  • Equipment maintenance: Porters ensure that ovens, refrigerators, mixers and other cooking equipment are in working order.

KITCHEN PORTER SKILLS

  • Communication: You should feel comfortable clearly explaining where items are and how much inventory you have. You may also need to describe any problems you see with the equipment to the Chef team. Biligual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred
  • Teamwork: Kitchens are fast-paced environments where you will work with many people, so teamwork skills are essential. You need to be able to take direction and understand the workflow. Time management: Kitchen porters must follow a schedule and easily transition between tasks. You should understand how long tasks will take and prioritize your work.
  • Food safety and sanitizing procedures: Kitchen porters help to keep food from cross-contaminating and ensure that surfaces are clean. You should know how to answer food safety questions, store food properly and prepare different ingredients.
  • Attention to detail: As a kitchen porter, you’re responsible for organizing, cleaning and storage. This means it’s essential to pay close attention to your environment.
  • Physical stamina: Porters may stand and perform repetitive movements for long periods. They may also lift heavy objects.
