JOB OVERVIEW

W.A.V.E. (Work and Volunteer Experience Program) at Dovercourt Recreation Centre has been a cornerstone of inclusive community engagement for over a decade, supporting adults with developmental disabilities in building job skills and contributing through volunteerism.
This new social enterprise, a café serving soups, blends culinary creativity with social impact, offering nutritious, seasonal soups served fresh at lunch and available frozen after hours. The café will provide a structured, supportive environment where employees—adults with developmental disabilities—gain hands-on experience in food preparation, customer service, and workplace professionalism.
The Café Supervisor will play a vital role in this mission, overseeing daily kitchen operations, mentoring staff, and ensuring a high standard of service and safety. This is more than a job, it’s an opportunity to lead with purpose and help shape an inclusive, empowering workplace.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is ideal for someone with a culinary background who is passionate about inclusive employment and has strong leadership and customer service skills. The Kitchen Supervisor will serve as an advocate for inclusive hiring practices and will play a key role in fostering a positive, empowering workplace culture. Qualifications for this position include:

  • Culinary training or equivalent experience in food preparation and kitchen management
  • Proven experience supervising staff in a food service environment
  • Strong organizational skills with experience in inventory control and purchasing
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills
  • Commitment to inclusive employment and experience working with individuals with disabilities
  • Ability to lead with empathy, patience, and professionalism
  • Certification in Food Safety (or willingness to obtain upon hiring)
  • Ability to adapt to unplanned situations and resolve issues effectively
  • Experience in catering, product development and menu planning is an asset

The salary sits at $45,000 per year ($21.63/hr.) based on a 40-hour work week. This role will initially be a 3-year contract, with the potential to transition to a permanent position in the future.

Responsibilities

DUTIES

The Kitchen Supervisor reports to the W.A.V.E. Coordinator and is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the café kitchen. This role includes:

  • Managing inventory and purchasing
  • Ensuring food safety standards are met
  • Developing new menu items
  • Supervising a team of employees—all of whom are adults with disabilities.
  • Coordinate staff schedules and training, ensuring a supportive and inclusive work environment.
