Collects, disinfects and disposes of all laboratory waste. Prepares solutions, labels tubes and specimen containers; may collect specimens and perform simple tests under supervision. Responsible for general laboratory functions such as emergency morgue relief, cleaning laboratory equipment, media preparation, receiving and distributing laboratory supplies, and some pick-up and delivery.

Responsibilities:

  • For direct care providers: Provides age appropriate care and intervention for ages of patients served according to job description (e.g. assessments, treatment plans, assists with assessments).
  • For non-direct care providers: Provides support services using age appropriate interpersonal communication.
  • Collects, disinfects, and transports all infectious laboratory waste from assigned laboratories according to established operating procedures.
  • Disposes of surgical specimens stored in the morgue on a weekly basis.
  • Maintains viewing area of the morgue in a clean and organized condition and controls the monitoring of all associated supplies.
  • Maintains weekly inventory of amputated limbs and fetus= stored in the morgue to ensure appropriate dispensation (either burial or disposal).
  • Follows all OSHA and NCCLS regulations concerning infectious laboratory waste; maintains required documentation.
  • Checks daily that autoclave is working properly and documents appropriately; notifies supervisor promptly of any malfunction.
  • Maintains laboratory media room and gross lab stations in a clean and sanitary condition, including rotating surgical specimens.
  • Routinely inspects and decontaminates all bins, pails and cans which have become contaminated with blood or other potentially infectious materials in all divisions.
  • Provides distilled water and chemicals for all clinical and surgical laboratories; replenishes solutions in tissue processor.
  • Checks inventory of laboratory supplies periodically; notifies supervisory when stocks are low; restocks shelves and rotates stock as needed.
  • Unpacks all deliveries of laboratory supplies and stores appropriately; rotates stock; notifies supervisor of problems (e.g., incomplete deliveries, expired stock).
  • Maintains compressed gas cylinders (e.g., checks that tanks are upright, full, and not leaking); changes tanks as needed; checks inventory of tanks weekly and restocks from outside storage area.
  • Performs duties of the lab data clerk.
  • Prepare media needed in Microbiology; performs and records QC on lab prepared media.
  • Cleans instruments and records temperature of instruments located in Histology and Microbiology.
  • Releases bodies of deceased patients to funeral directors as authorized.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION:

High school graduation or equivalent required.

EXPERIENCE:

1 year of laboratory experience preferred.

SKILLS:

Must pass basic math skills test.
Manual dexterity.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Good interpersonal skills.
Speaks, reads and writes English to the extent required by the position.
