QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Medical Technologist ASCP Certified
  • Bachelor degree in clinical laboratory science, chemical, physical biological or equivalent to the requirement of a technical personnel qualification based on CLIA and CAP
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a Clinical Laboratory
  • Excellent communication skills verbal and written
  • Computer proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint required

Responsibilities
  • Oversees all activities of the personnel in the section involved with specimens including the initial specimen collection or receipt, processing, reading, documenting, and reporting to physicians. Serves as a resource person for most technical questions or directs to appropriate references. Performs at the bench as required with skills equal to the technical staff. Stays current in the technical field. Directs Quality Control Program in the section with all required documentation. Assures that all instruments have been calibrated and scheduled quality control is performed and documented. Is able to institute correction action with documentation when performance is unacceptable.
  • Oversees, documents, and maintains scheduling for all personnel within your section including vacation, leave of absences, sick days, work assignments, and rotation and training of work assignments. Interviews, hires, disciplines, discharges and is responsible for all evaluations in your section in conjunction with Laboratory Administrator. In-services and maintains documentation on each employee for competency and efficiency in their job as well as orientation to general hospital and laboratory policies and procedures. Oversees the training of new employees. Offers suggestions for continuing education activities. Schedules time for continuing education programs for the techs in the section. Assures appropriate LIS and HIS training.
  • Ensures that the section is maintained and prepared for unscheduled inspections. Ensures the general cleanliness of the lab. Work benches are clean and orderly and housekeeping is notified if necessary. The procedure manuals and policies are reviewed, signed off annually. Quality control is performed and documented for all instruments and procedures in accordance with State and regulatory agency requirements. Ensures that proficiency tests are performed and reported correctly.
  • Responsible for overall laboratory safety in the section of the lab and reporting correcting any hazards encountered according the following criteria: Reports any actual or potential safety issues or hazards to the Laboratory’s Safety Committee. Ensures all accidents are properly reported and all employee health service, lab, and hospital policies are complied with. Practices and enforces lab safety: follows chemical hygiene plan, abides by standard precautions, Hazcom regulations, and OSHA blood borne pathogens control plan.
  • Acts as a liaison between lab administration, hospital administration, Medical Directors, and staff regarding matters of general laboratory, and hospital policy and changes in procedure or protocols within the section according to the following: Holds regular discussion meetings with the personnel and issues typed meeting minutes of all meetings to the staff, Medical Director and Laboratory Administrator. Attends weekly supervisor meetings and schedules staff meetings within the section at least every month. Must participate actively making suggestions, being involved in studies, and new projects for the welfare of the laboratory.
  • Submits budget variance reports as needed and participates in the annual budget preparation according to the following criteria: Prepares budget for section with realistic goals and objectives. Budgets submitted to the Laboratory Administrator within established time frame. Stays within budget limits or provides satisfactory explanation and justification for not doing so. Suggests realistic cost containment ideas.
  • Prepares and maintains policies and procedures appropriate for the section. Reviews, revises, and obtains appropriate signatures for policy and procedure section manuals. Introduces new or improved procedures. Responsible for all reporting. Ensures that all policies are followed for result reporting (STAT’s, panic, revised, etc) Errors are detected, corrected, documented, and notification is made to appropriate personnel. Effectively uses Midas system for reporting patient issues and procedural variances.
  • Sets a leadership example for other employees to follow according to the following criteria: Demonstrates leadership skills as evidenced from co-workers and exit interviews of employees. During stressful or frustrating conditions is able to solve problems and be understanding and supportive of others. Accepts constructive feedback and criticism appropriately. Promotes excellence within the section and effectively develops staff. Communication, cooperation, and assistance are given promptly in a clear, courteous manner to co-workers, hospital staff, patients, physicians, and other hospital personnel.
  • Interviews, hires, disciplines, discharges, and is responsible for all evaluations in your section in conjunction with the Operations Manager. In-services and maintains documentation on each employee for competency and efficiency in their job as well as orientation to universal precautions, chemical hygiene plan fire, and hospital safety, OSHA exposure control plan (blood borne pathogens and formaldehyde), as well as general hospital and laboratory rules and policies. Time cards are completed accurately and on time. Conducts and documents counseling sessions as warranted.
