LAB SUPERVISOR- POINT OF CARE AND MICRO

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s Degree Medical Technology, Clinical Lab Science or Chemical, Physical or Biological science
  • 5 years under the direction of an MT or Pathologist required
  • 2 years of Leadership experience preferred
  • MT(ASCP) - Medical Technologist Upon Hire Required Or CT(ASCP)
  • Cytotechnologist Upon Hire Required Or HTL(ASCP)
  • Histotechnologist Upon Hire Required Or MLS(ASCP)
  • Medical Lab Scientist Upon Hire Required Or SCT(ASCP)
  • Specialist in Cytotechnology Upon Hire Required
  • Other equivalent of one of the above including AMT, AAB, HHS, NCA, HEW, CLS-CA, FL, NY state license, Philippine Board Upon Hire Required HT(ASCP) Histotechnician if supervising Histology within Anatomical Pathology Upon Hire Required
Responsibilities

Leadership/Staff Supervision:

  • Oversees work schedules and personnel assignments for the department
  • Delegates employee responsibilities as needed
  • Monitors overtime usage
  • Assists in investigation of corrected and situation reports when required. Informs supervisor of any situation that requires counseling of employees
  • Completes employee performance appraisals within designated time frame
  • Participates in interviewing and hiring processes
  • Performs daily review of results from the department.
  • Displays good judgment
  • Recognizes and defuses crisis situations, including complaints from physicians, nurses, other hospital personnel, patients and/or their families, and co-workers
  • Recognizes differentiates between major and minor problems. Reports legitimate problems to an appropriate person and helps develop viable solutions to problems
  • Regularly makes constructive suggestions for departmental improvement and shows willingness to help supervisor implement changes
  • Develops and/or coordinates departmental projects and assigns when workload allows
  • Coordinates evaluation of new techniques and procedures in the laboratory in terms of equipment, space method comparison, establishment of reference values and related statistical analysis
  • Writes and revises technical procedures
  • Assists in investigation of corrected and situation reports when required. Informs supervisor of any situation that requires counseling of employees

Lab Operations and Test Procedures:

  • Assumes and performs complex laboratory procedures when needed
  • Maintains testing procedure competency
  • Checks and investigates specimens not collected/received on the outstanding tests list
  • Reviews abnormal results
  • Performs patient care tasks in a manner that enhances the quality of patient care
  • Helps hospital and laboratory coworkers provide timely patient care
  • Demonstrates active cost effectiveness
  • Follows established laboratory test procedures
  • Evaluates tests and reports tests
  • Knows and uses computer downtime procedures as needed when computer is not available
  • Communicates and documents relevant patient data to appropriate personnel

Quality Control/Documentation:

  • Reviews reagent quality control that is reported by the technologists and instrument maintenance that is performed by the technologists
  • Follows laboratory policies when quality control is not within established limits
  • Resolves quality control discrepancies before releasing/reporting patient results
  • Documents corrective action
  • Adheres and documents laboratory equipment maintenance policies and activities
  • Documents maintenance performed
  • Demonstrates knowledge to troubleshoot equipment
  • Compiles and reviews action plans of departmental performance improvement laboratory monitors when needed
  • Delegates proficiency testing survey material, reviews results, and submit results to regulatory agency
  • Investigates incorrect results
  • Oversees supply inventory

Professional Accountability:

  • Participates in orientation and training of students, volunteers, new employees and observers
  • Maintains, documents, and communicates current education requirements and obtains training and education required by system, hospital, and laboratory
  • Mandatory health requirements are completed with required time frame
  • Completes assigned work within required time and offers assistance to other coworkers
  • Uses laboratory equipment (computer, instruments, etc) for hospital use only
  • Budgets and schedules PTO for effective staffing levels
  • Time and attendance is satisfactory
  • Employee exhibits a professional appearance
  • Seeks assistance/supervision/consultation as needed and reports to supervisor any problems and/or solutions regarding delivery of patient care
  • Maintains effective liaison with other laboratory sections and other hospital departments to facilitate information exchange and enhance patient care
