Position Summary: The Lab Tech performs analysis on hops, hop products, beer, and hop derived products in other matrices. This position reports results per strict timeframes and deadlines, as required by management, to assure quality. This role assists in developing and writing methods of analysis, and in R&D projects as needed. Shift: primarily graveyard during production season, switch to dayshift temporarily after harvest Primary Responsibilities: 40% 1. Samples and Documentation * Organizes samples by analysis type and priority then prepares and extracts samples for analysis * Analyzes samples by one or more approved methods of analysis (including UV Spectrophotometric, Conductometric, HPLC, GC, Distillation, Rotovap, Viscometer, pH meter, GC-FID, or other chemical analysis); proficiently able to perform/utilize all methods * Performs instrument and calibration checks on all laboratory equipment to ensure instruments are within specifications. * Calculates and interprets results * Communicates with production, other lab personnel and management throughout the analysis to convey results or problems, to keep processes running smoothly * Prepares hop product samples for customers, collaborative studies, and for outside analytical service * Keeps accurate records and logs for all samples * Identifies and labels all samples * Logs all sample information into appropriate spreadsheets and ERP * Inputs sample information into appropriate database and spreadsheets * Assures that results are calculated correctly and conveyed to appropriate party * Maintains sample history by storing documents and spreadsheets safely, updates computer records, and creates new forms if necessary * Maintains and organizes storage of reference samples * Assists in generating reports for company management and customers. 40% 2. Maintains lab in orderly, safe, and professional manner * Follows Chemical Hygiene plan and all other safety guidelines * Uses proper laboratory techniques, safety apparel and GLP's when performing analyses. * Ensures that glassware is properly cleaned and stored safely, and inventory on hand is adequate * Ensures that chemicals are returned to proper storage, restock short-term storage as needed and notify manager when laboratory supplies are in need to be ordered. * Performs preventative maintenance on instrumentation as required and notify manager of any problems or peculiarities * Handles and disposes hazardous chemical waste properly. * Updates SDS folders and chemical inventory. * Complies with John I. Haas, Inc. Environmental Management system (EMS) and have been trained on the EMS, and in particular the Energy, Universal Waste and Emergency Response requirements. Other procedures from the EMS shall be trained and followed as applicable to requirements of the position. Specifically trained in importance of conformity, significant environment aspect, roles and responsibilities and potential consequence for departure from procedure 15% 3. Procedures and Techniques * Assists in developing and writing new methods of analysis for quality system * Cross trains in Pellet Plant Laboratory and The Center Laboratory; assists when needed. Research and Development: * Provide analytical support for product development and product studies into new markets. 5% 4. Other duties as assigned Conditions of Employment: 1. Must comply with all John I. Haas, Inc. policies and procedures, including successful passing of pre-employment background check and drug test. 2. Work a scheduled 40-hour work week. Hours worked over 40 per week will be paid as overtime. Must be flexible and able to work additional time and weekends as business may require. 3. Able to work in and around an analytical laboratory setting containing chemicals, solvents, and hop products. 4. Will be required to withstand long periods of standing and must have the ability to lift 40-pound cans daily. Must have good visual and auditory acuity. 5. Must comply with our Integrated Management System (IMS) and be trained on procedures applicable to the requirements of the position, including managing significant quality, environmental, and food safety aspects. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: 1. Associates Degree in a related science field. 2. Must have basic knowledge of laboratory techniques and proper handling of chemicals. 3. Must possess good math, problem solving, computer and calculator skills, as well as good organization skills and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions from others. 4. Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills Preferred: 1. Bachelor's Degree in Science or Associates Degree and work experience in a lab setting. 2. Familiarity and experience using gas chromatography (GC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometers 3. Experience in a quality role related to hops, brewing, winemaking, food science, etc. This form indicates the general nature and level of work performed by employees with this job title. PAY INFORMATION: * Salary Range: $47,520 to $71,280 annually. This range reflects the full pay scale for all roles within this position's grade. The actual salary offer will consider various factors, such as experience and, if applicable, location.
