Description Job Title: Labor & Delivery/Acute Care Registered Nurse (RN) Department: Hospital Reports To: Director of Nursing FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Hours: 36/week Shift: Graveyards, 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. JOB DESCRIPTION The Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse is a highly skilled, compassionate, and autonomous Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse (RN) in a Critical Access Hospital (CAH) setting. As an L&D nurse in a rural community, you will provide comprehensive, patient-centered care for mothers and newborns throughout the entire birthing process (antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum). This role requires a versatile clinician comfortable with a wide scope of practice, capable of managing low-volume, high-stakes scenarios with significant responsibility, and serving as a key liaison among patients, family, and our provider team. In addition to being an L&D nurse, you will hold the responsibility of an Acute Care Unit Registered Nurse (RN), who is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care. Utilizes the nursing process by use of technology, therapeutic intervention, evidence-based practice, and coordination of care with other health team members under facility and departmental policies and following standards of professional nursing practice. As an Acute Care RN, you play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing Franklin County Medical Center's standards of care. Your primary focus will be to provide patient care and help manage patient outcomes. This position is deemed safety-sensitive and will adhere to all policies associated with this designation. Provide direct care to patients in labor, including monitoring fetal heart rates and maternal vital signs Evaluate patients in triage, conducting assessments to determine if they are in active labor or experiencing pregnancy complications (e.g., preeclampsia, preterm labor) Proficiently manage obstetric emergencies such as shoulder dystocia, cord prolapse, and postpartum hemorrhage until transfer or provider intervention Safely titrate high-alert medications, including Oxytocin (Pitocin) and Magnesium Sulfate Provide education and support to patients and families regarding labor, delivery, newborn care, and breastfeeding Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system Collaborate with physicians, midwives, and support staff to ensure safe, high-quality patient outcomes Provides professional nursing care for patients in the acute care unit Demonstrates the ability to set priorities and coordinate and organize patient care delivery through effectively managing time, supplies, and resources Familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the acute patient care unit Comply with evaluation, treatment, and documentation guidelines Promotes nursing professionalism and participates in the development of others Follow hospital regulatory and professional guidelines, policies, and procedures Performs head-to-toe assessments of each patient promptly Ensures established inventory standards for medicines, solutions, supplies, and equipment, and accounts for narcotics Prepares and administers injections, performs routine tests, manages wound care, and changes bandages Administers medications within the scope of license, monitors, and documents treatment progress, and patient response Participates in the implementation and evaluation of patient care based on practice guidelines, standards of care, and federal/state laws and regulations Establishes rapport with patients, families, and others who need to understand care requirements Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, friends, and families Reports all changes in the patient’s condition and accidents/incidents to the Charge Nurse as soon as practical Cooperates with other personnel to achieve department objectives and maintain good employee, interdepartmental, and public relations Provides or delegates care consistent with the plan of care, guidelines of care, and professional licensure provisions Identifies patient care requirements by establishing personal rapport with patients and other persons Promotes patients’ independence by establishing patient care goals, teaching patients, friends, and family about the diagnosis, medication, and self-care skills Addresses patient problems and needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations Timely documentation, according to the current Franklin County Medical Center’s Timely Documentation Protocol, is required Maintain confidentiality by protecting sensitive, proprietary, or confidential information. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items or patients Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients, as well as obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items or patients Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.) May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended time Must be able to access and navigate throughout the department within the organization's facilities Ongoing need for the employee to see and read information labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, and identify/operate equipment and supplies Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing necessary information, and other tasks WORK ENVIRONMENT FCMC operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The operational needs of departments may require you to be available to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, to meet the needs of patients. Potential exposure to blood, body tissue, fluids, contagious diseases, and hazardous waste. Occasional exposure to bodily injury, loud/unpleasant noise, unpleasant odor, and emotional or physical stress. May be required to work day or night in a confined environment or in varying temperatures. The employee works in the hospital setting and occasionally takes ambulance transports to other facilities. May be required to travel to other facilities to obtain training/certification as necessary.
