Job Description: Laboratory Assistant Clinical Laboratory: Obtains blood specimens, in a courteous and professional manner, from patients of all age ranges. Provides support to phlebotomists and medical laboratory scientists. Pathology Laboratory: Serves as a liaison between transcriptionists, histo-techs, cytotechnologists, and pathologists to keep the workflow processes efficient and to expedite laboratory reporting from the pathology department. SKILLS AND ABILITIES Demonstrates the ability to use a personal computer and various software programs applicable to the position Demonstrates the ability to operate applicable office equipment Exhibits the ability to deal effectively interdepartmentally & with the public Exhibits the ability to maintain confidentiality, think and act independently with minimal supervision in all situations including traumas Demonstrates the ability to enter data with minimal errors, including accurately inputting numerical data such as account numbers, medical record numbers, or billing amounts and codes Maintains regular, consistent and punctual attendance at the assigned job location Demonstrates a general knowledge of medical terminology and safety precautions Displays high attention to critical details and accuracy Exhibits the ability to multi-task EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/DEGREES Must meet current qualifications listed under section “Clinical Laboratory Personnel Requirements” defined in the federal Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments Act of 1988 (CLIA-88) and Oregon Department of Human Services Regulations, College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Joint Commission standards. CAP reserves the right to set requirements that are more stringent than those of CLIA-88 (High School Diploma or Equivalent required for certification) Medical Assistant Certification and/or Certified phlebotomy certification from a nationally recognized accreditation organization; or completion of a formalized phlebotomy course. Associates of Science degree in relevant field may substitute certification EXPERIENCE Working knowledge of, but not limited to: LIS and HIS computer Systems and related equipment, bar code scanner, telephone, Vacutainer System-syringes, butterfly needles, safety needles, finger/heel stick devices, , bar code printers, centrifuges, various analytical instruments for loading specimens, thermometers and other metered alarm systems, slide stainers (hematology and/or cytology) and Pevco pneumatic system At least one year of experience as a Phlebotomist At least one year experience performing similar job functions, including waived testing GENERAL INFORMATION Union Affiliation: UFCW The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position.
