POSITION SUMMARY DEFINITION Under supervision, collects and processes specimens; performs simple tests under supervision; enters information into computer; maintains logs, delivers reports and prepares referral specimens; and to do other work as required. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS A position in this class performs all aspects of routine laboratory and clerical work as well as may serve in a lead capacity over Phlebotomists. Incumbents are responsible for ensuring an orderly and efficient work flow and redistributing work assignments as may be required. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Education Graduation from high school, possession of a Certificate of Phlebotomy issued by the California Laboratory Field Services, and graduation from an accredited program of Phlebotomy. Experience Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way would be: Minimum of one year experience as a phlebotomist Licensure/Certification Possession of a valid license to practice as a Certified Phlebotomist in the State of California is required. BLS Certification through AHA only. Possession of an appropriate valid California driver’s license. Employees must maintain a driving record, which meets the insurability requirements of the PHH, Inc. KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES Knowledge of: Common laboratory practices and procedures. The preparation of reagents, solutions, and stains. Routine laboratory methods and procedures including safety procedures for working with patients. Standard laboratory equipment, operation, and maintenance. Laboratory Information Systems. Ability to: Draw blood from patients. Manage emergency or crisis situations; requires judgements/action which could result in poor undesirable patient outcomes. Learn elementary laboratory methods, procedures, and maintenance requirements. Performs basic arithmetic computations. Keep accurate records. Follow oral and written directions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. AGE-SPECIFIC COMPETENCY (If applicable) Maintains, demonstrates and is assessed on the knowledge and skills necessary to provide for physical, psychosocial and cultural needs appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her assigned unit.
